Five-time Dakar winner Al-Attiya dominated the fifth test between Al’Ula and Hail on Thursday, winning by 9 minutes 59 seconds, but dropped 10 minutes in time due to losing a spare wheel. He finished one second behind Quintero.
Dacia has a unique system where the spare wheel is kept inside the car. It has a quick release mechanism that makes life easier for its crew, but also makes it risky.
Al-Attiyah are fourth in the overall standings after the sanction, but now face a 35-minute deficit to the overall leader henk letgan Toyota’s.
