Zelt Dekmantel installs cloth canopy on stage
As the Dekmantel Festival opens its 2025 version in Amsterdams Bose, NetherlandsCurtain 01, an architectural Installation By Zelt, the practice of Dutch designer Johannes ofhaus, introduces a manufactured addition to the forest landscape. The structure takes the form of a suspended climmous canopy that extends above the DJ booths in the selectors’ phase, which is a longer preferred among festivals. Inspired by Coture Construction and spatial design, its task is to provide rain protection for DJs performing in a three -day program. Nevertheless, the project creates a separate spatial atmosphere that mediate between natural settings, congestion and sound intensity of live performance. ‘Initial idea was to suspend it between two trees,’ The designer tells us. ‘As designs and forces increased, it became impossible. Now four steel poles are hidden between the trees that keep the entire installation suspended. This allows me to keep the rest of the details very light and simple.,

The canopy of the zelt is suspended from the steel anchor and placed in place through a system of ropes and aluminum rods, allowing it to swim above the heavy concrete phase element. The fabric is shaped in a range of curved forms, repeating the fabric, producing a wavy overhead surface that catches light and air. Using a single color and consistent geometry gives the structure a cool visual appearance, opposite the surrounding speed and sound. When playing with curtain characteristics, the design developed for three circular-shaped curtains, pushed into three different aircraft by aluminum tubing. While van Abbe conceived a prefab concrete DJ booth as a stable core for the vinyl set, the preamble came with a mild, expressive textile canopy that hovers up. ‘Heavy concrete – an ideal anchor point – naturally invited a mild (visually and literal) textile tensile piece,’ He adds.
With curtain 01, the light design of Szakács brings a cinematic tone to the space, mentioning the 1970s science-fi film sets and reputed rock shows such as Pompei performance of Pink Floids through warm white, amber, and soft blues, which are mixed with white clothes.
