TL;DR
- Android 16 introduced a new Advanced Security Mode to secure apps and systems against common threats.
- A few months ago we saw that Google was working on adding a new screen that shows which apps know about your advanced security settings.
- With the October Google Play Services update, that screen is finally arriving.
No need for a full-time job and a system like Android 16 to keep your data safe advanced security The mode makes it quick and easy to configure your smartphone for maximum protection. Although this is great at a system level, a few weeks ago we started to see what Google is doing to help you Apps know when advanced protection was turned onAnd see who can use this information to provide their additional security precautions. And now it’s finally ready to go live.
In its latest set of Play Services release notes, Google One additional thing highlighted in October: “A new page now shows apps that ask for elevated security status.”
It sounds exactly like the screen we were able to preview in August, which informs you about apps that have queried the system for elevated security status (and, presumably, used that information to inform their own security protocols).
We still have a lot of questions about which apps can take advantage of this capability. When we took an initial look, we were only seeing other Google apps using the information — obviously the apps referenced by Advanced Protection, like Phone, Messages, and Chrome. It’s possible that third-party browsers and messaging apps may also want to know about the advanced security status (which is why we’re getting this tool, after all) but so far we don’t have any concrete information about who will fall on that list.
Hopefully this will start to change, though, as this screen starts appearing on more of our phones – at the moment, we’ve only seen it on one (running a beta Android 16 release, no less), but with this Play Services update, it’s only a matter of time before availability expands.
Are you taking advantage of advanced security on your Android 16 device? Do you find this a convenient way to secure a lot of things at once, or perhaps it’s too restrictive for you to commit to? Tell us about your experience in the comments.
