Yamaha’s V4 Motogp engine “is still not enough enough”, Fernandez says

Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernandez It is claimed that its V4 engine is “still not sufficiently enough” with the Japanese marks in the hope of using it for the 2026 Motogp campaign.

The organization is developing a new power unit from last year, the only Motogp manufacturer with Yamaha that uses Inline Four instead of V4.

It has seen a correlation with performance as Yamaha, which is the previous major force, currently under the standing of 2025 constructs after 11 rounds.

So Fernandez, who has been recorded for the Czech Grand Prix later this week, recently completed a private trial in the branx to continue the development of the engine.

Fernandez said, “It looks good, it looks very positive and everything, but it is still not quite sharp.”

“This will decide the (engine) for the next year. Let’s see if in the next months during this summer, we have some more tests to try to speed up the process and the bike is designed for the end of the season.

“We need to accelerate this process because if we want to run with V4 next year, we still need to do a lot of work.

“The final test was still not a full package, the engine full (power) is not one. Everything is too early for everything.”

But Fernandez said that Yamaha engineers are selecting more gradual process in Japanese factory with development.

“The engine is not in its full performance from Japan,” he said. “They (engineers) do not give us all power from the engine, but if they understand the process, it would be good.

“At some point, we will need to see what is sharp in terms of lap time. This is what will decide (which engine to choose). It is not a negative, but we just need to see better lap time.

“They want to understand it without breaking it. They give us a little (performance). In Japan, things are like this. They want to understand everything very well. Nothing against it is nothing until we have a good bike for the next year, but it is still running well.”
