Why do people leave the coffee ground in the fridge
Instead of throwing old coffee fields, consider using them in your fridge to help deal with bad smells.
Sophia Martinez, a cleaning specialist and founder of Sparkley Maid Austin and CEO explains how the coffee grounds are great in soaking moisture and trapping the bad odor because they are porous.
“The field has small nooks that absorb unwanted smells, rather than masking them with a new fragrance,” says Martinez. “This is a spontaneous and organic way of refreshing the fridge, without using any chemical products or sprays.”

Armando Calderan, owner of Joy’s cleaning services, explains how coffee fields work because they are naturally exploitative and are filled with nitrogen, which helps neutralize smell molecules instead of masking.
“Unlike baking soda, which is purely exploitative, coffee has an soil smell that can refresh the refrigerator subtle, absorbing bad smells,” Classeran explains.
Martinez recommends them to keep them in a small open container or shallow bowl, and then puts it towards the back of the fridge so that it does not collide around. This will still allow enough air circulation around it.
“If your fridge is large, or especially smelly, you can place a couple of small containers at various levels on the shelves, so that it can help function better and equally,” called martinez.
Calderan agrees and also suggests that it is not safe to set your coffee ground on a shelf if it is safe enough.
Tips to use coffee ground in fridge
- Dry the coffee ground. Calderan emphasizes the importance of completely drying the coffee before placing it in the fridge, as molds can cause more problems to deal with wet grounds.
- Use a paper towel. Martinez suggested using some paper towels to spread the coffee ground before placing it in the fridge, so any residue dried up.
- Change the coffee ground. If you start smelling the smell again, remember to change the bowl of the coffee every two to three weeks, or even soon.
