To help you get the most Delicious Chocolate Chip CookiesWe tried six different brands of chocolate chips, and the results of our taste test may surprise you.

How we tested chocolate chips

To find out which chocolate chips give you the best bang for your buck, we tried six of the top brands available in stores and online. we tested Semisweet Chips Only, so this review does not include special flavors like milk chocolate or dark chocolate.

Each brand of chocolate chip was tasted without baking, and my partner and I both noted the texture and flavor. then i used standard Toll House Cookie Recipe For a batch of chocolate chip cookies with all the ingredients except the chips. I divided the dough evenly and baked 8 cookies with each brand of chocolate chip. All cookies were scooped out using the same cookie scooper that was baked on same sheet panAnd at the same temperature to avoid any changes in baking which may affect the quality and taste.

What we discovered in chocolate chips

Chocolate chips have been a staple in American baking since their creation The first chocolate chip cookies in 1937A chef named Ruth Graves Wakefield at the Toll House Inn added pieces of Nestlé chocolate bar her cookie recipeOriginally, Nestlé sold baking chocolate bars that came with a tool for home cooks to cut the bar into pieces. But by 1941, the chocolate chip morsels we know and love today were being sold in stores.

Today, different brands offer their own versions of the classic chocolate chip. To find the best, we need to set ground rules for how we measure what’s good and what can be left out.

  • Taste. When it comes to chocolate chip cookies, the chips are the star of the show, so they have to taste just right. We looked at how each bite tasted on its own before baking, and then how it tasted after baking into a cookie. Were the bites bitter? Creamy? Buttery? spicy? smooth? What was the sweetness level? Were there any artificial flavors, or were there solid authentic cocoa and cocoa butter flavors?
  • texture. Were the bites chalky, sticky or smooth when raw? Do they melt in your hands? How well did the bites hold up when cooked? Did they retain their flavor or taste? Are the chips nice and melty?

Without further ado, here are the rankings.

AllRecipes/Ghirardelli

We completely agreed that this chip was a winner. The taste and texture of these uncooked chips is like an expensive chocolate bar. In the cookie, they were sticky and buttery, and maintained the perfect balance of sweet and bitter. They’re definitely a premium chip at $5.79 per bag, but worth it in our opinion.

Runner-up: Great Value Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips

All dishes/excellent value

Great Value Chips came in second place. Uncooked they had quite a complex flavor with bright fruit hints and a soft texture that melts in your hand. As for the cookies, they were beautifully gooey and my companion described them as “velvety, melty goodness.” He was surprised that a store brand performed so much better than other popular brands. And at less than $3 per bag, they’re a great budget option, too.

Most Polarizing Chocolate Chips: Nestle Toll House Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips

All Cuisine/Toll House

There’s no doubt that this is the classic chip for chocolate chip cookies. We all grew up watching cozy, sentimental Toll House commercials that made us feel warm and happy inside. So I was surprised to see how different my perspective on this chip was from my partner’s. I did a little research online, and it seems like everyone feels pretty strongly about this chocolate chip: either you love it, or you hate it.

Without cooking they have a sharp nutty flavour. I like nut milk, while my partner doesn’t, so he wasn’t a fan of it. When the cookies were baked, they were sticky, but not as melty as Ghirardelli chips. They have a complex flavor profile that is creamy and spicy with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. Again, I liked this combo, but my partner did not. Overall, I have to give these chips high praise for complexity and nostalgia, but be careful if you’re cooking for a crowd with varying tastes.

Best Allergen-Free Chocolate Chips: Toll House Allergen-Free Chocolate Chips

All Cuisine/Toll House

We were pleasantly surprised by the texture and flavor of this allergen-free chip. These chocolate chips are free from all major allergens. Uncooked, they had a dense texture and bright flavor with a hint of blueberry. They spread really well into the cookies and gave an even amount of chocolate to each bite. Although they didn’t have the sticky, melty texture of the others, they were soft to the bite and nicely sweet. If you like a sweeter chip, this is for you.

Best Vegan Chocolate Chips: Geffen Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips

allrecipes/geffen

Like Toll House Allergy-Free Chocolate Chips, these chips are free of most major allergens, including dairy or animal products – and they’re about half the price! When eaten raw they are very sweet and crunchy. When baked into cookies they hold their shape and have a nice bitter dark chocolate flavor.
