Wiltrox Lens Nicon’s Z-Mount is a better option than the native lens. There, I said. And it has been coming from someone who has used Nikon for 40 years and can even be somewhat “fanboy”. I am now influenced by the Viltrox lens for a few years – and three of myself – but the new Viltrox AF 135 mm f/1.8 lab full frame is a new level of influential.
When Nikon announced him 135 mm F/1.8 PlanaI did a little day-to-day and drooling. At the same time. It is a very luxurious lens, the only Nikon lens for the Z system that I really wanted. I could see myself using it for video work, especially. But I could not justify the $ 2,500 price tag for the number of the time when I would use it.
One or a year later, with my imagination of a sharp 135 mm, comes with Wiltrox AF 135 mm F/1.8 Lab full frame. Now my interest has been ruled. Lab is a new line of the remand premium lens from the Wiltrox that sits over their Pro Lens range.
Those lovely people sent me one in the Wiltrox. I had an understanding to say. Secondly you slide from the sexy black box lid, peel plastic wrap, and catch it, you know that you have found a premium lens in your hands. It looks good as Nikon’s plana. A plana weighs 995 grams, and the Wiltrox on 1,265 grams is slightly heavy. I can live with that. Both use 82 mm filters, which makes me happy because my best filters are all 82 mm, and if I can help it I don’t like to use step-down ring.
So Viltrox assures Nikon as 135 mm as well and assured Nikon as 135 mm. But how does it perform? I don’t have a plana to compare side-by-side, but I have played with the plana, so I am familiar with it-but it doesn’t matter anyway. What is important to take out 135 mm of Wiltrox and use it in real -life conditions, and looking at the results.
Viltrox 135 mm lab f/1.8 test
A 135 mm lens tight pictures, still perfect for life and wildlife. For me, I use this focal length for travel and landscape. It is very good to take a building details or a single tree in an area.
I am late at the party with a review of this lens because I wanted to live with it for a few months and use it for various types of landscapes from food, pictures to outdoor action.
My first priority was to test the autofocus, which was paired with my Nikon Z6 III. I was curious to see how the eye tracking performs in the difficult low light or backlit scenes, and how the lens performs close-up photography such as food or to remove flowers in any area.
The lens, working with the tracking of the camera eye, did a great job. The OEM lens is asked to perform best with focus tracking, but this lens handled various types of conditions as well as any of my original Nikon Z-Mount Lens.
Wide open shoots at f/1.8, the quality of the image is incredible. The corners are sharp, and there is no noticeable viewing – something that is common when shooting with fast lenses on their broad aperture. For deformation, I did not really notice anything.
The sweet space for sharpness appears to be around f/4. However at f/1.8 and f/5.6 it performs incredibly well and is great for F/11. This is the kind of lens. I suspect that you will use f/5.6 beyond. I will not definitely do it, because this lens is about separating your subject from the background. We want a beautiful creamy blurred background, and this lens distributes it to the spad.
The out-off-focus background is certainly presented beautifully, and bright highlights are smooth circles that are affected by f/1.8 to f/2.8, thanks to the 11-blade aperture part. They start getting less butter beyond f/4.
The main appeal of 135 mm lens for me is for video work. This lens has some thoughtful features that meet videographers and filmmakers, which I appreciate.
The manual focus has the ability to select, and although you will not pull the focus-by-wire lens and you will also be on a helicoidal cine lens, the lens has a second FN (function) button on the lens that allows you to set A and B Focus points and togle between them with minimal focus. It is a bit sharp, so it works best if you are shooting 60 or 120 frames per second and slowing the clip in the post.
The lens also has a de-click switch for the aperture ring, do you need smooth aperture racking-no one has the original 135 mm of Nikon.
What i love
-
It feels good to catch and operate the Viltrox 135 mm. You can feel quality, and it gives a confidence.
-
The sharpness is actually defective.
-
Dust and weather sealing is spectacular.
-
The lens comes with a long hood, tilted inside, and is characterized by a rubber front adding – a thoughtful detail.
What i don’t like
With other Viltrox lenses, you can visit their website to download the latest firmware updates. Easy. This is a minor discomfort that you need to update a lens, but easy to do.
With 135 mm lab, you cannot do this. You have to download an app for your phone. I do not apps, but I went inside and tried. And it could not get to work. After half an hour, I left it. Alternatively, you can download an app for your computer. So I tried, but my MacBook Pro did not allow me to install software for fear of malware, and I had to override that warning. There is nothing that I feel comfortable in doing.
I needed the latest firmware update because the lens would not work on my Nikon Z6 III or Z9. Once when I messed up about all that, everything was fine.

conclusion
Wiltrox has gone with strength with strength over the years, making some fantastic lenses. This is the most influential lens that I have done with my own hands till date. I extremely recommends this lens if the depiction, still life, and even wildlife is something that is important for you, and you want incredible – I say almost defective performance for a very reasonable price.
It looks good to catch the lens, it is well created, and additional functionality – you need it – thought and applied very well.
It performs Nikon Plena 135 mm f/1.8 as well – one third of the cost.
