Pant lovers rejoice! Tern Studios’ pre-fall assortment of pants is phenomenal. This includes a baggy leather pair to wear with a sheer cashmere top; Paper-bag-waist to wear traditionally high, or refreshingly low on the hips; And black denim that’s been brought up a bit — “They’re oversized, but not crazy oversized,” Anna Turnell said on a call — like a fitted double leather jacket or a cropped topper cut so close to the body. To combine it with, the designer said she would wear it as a shirt.
As far as the actual shirt goes, it has button-downs with pointed collars (they come into a triangle in the back, almost as if you’ve tied on a square scarf). The almost neon red pleated trousers add a touch of color to the mostly black offering. The use of beige checks and dark pinstripes adds a sartorial touch, while studded belts create a slight western vibe, the designer said.
This pre-fall offering continues the boyish style Turnell has been exploring over the past few seasons. Buyers are requesting dresses, which has the designer asking herself, “What is femininity for me right now?” The single frock she offered is a double-leather midi with a V-neck and a functional pocket. There are two pieces that draw attention to the waist, and fun accessories such as orange sandals, which can live up to expectations. Yet at Tern Studios, femininity is more linked to a female-friendly wardrobe than to any aesthetic or specific attire. And that looks modern.
