Every October, thousands of people come to Banner Elk’s most unique tradition: the Woolly Worm Festival“It’s the only festival in North Carolina where you can race a worm on a string for a chance to predict the winter weather,” said Nancy Owen, Banner Elk’s tourism director. According to Owen, more than 20,000 people will attend the two-day festival. She added, “It’s a wonderful family atmosphere, with something for all ages. Whether you want to wrestle with bugs, eat some funnel cake, shop from local arts and crafts vendors, or listen to live music, you’re guaranteed to have a fun time.” After being canceled last year due to Hurricane Helene, locals are especially eager to bring back the festival on October 18 and 19, and welcome visitors as the town continues to recover.

Fall is the shining star in Banner Elk. October is my favorite time to visit as it is peak festival season and usually the best time for vibrant foliage. The Woolly Worm Festival takes place in mid-October, drawing crowds for races, parades and live music.

September is quieter but still offers cool weather, while November brings late-season color and fewer visitors, making it an ideal time for a more peaceful vacation.

Owen agrees that fall is a beautiful time to visit Banner Elk. “One of the things that makes Banner Elk so beautiful during the fall is the changing colors. Banner Elk is located in a valley surrounded by Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain, which have several mile-high peaks. It’s fun to watch the colors change from the top of the peaks to the valley below.”

“Our small businesses really come into their own in the fall with festive displays of pumpkins and mums,” she added.

Banner Elk is a small, intimate and community-oriented town. Fall weekends can be busy, especially during the Woolly Worm Festival, so book accommodations early.

Another helpful tip: pack in layers. Mornings and evenings in the mountains can be cool, while afternoons often get so hot that you’ll want to wear a jacket or sweater. Finally, if you’re planning a fall leaf-peeping trip, check local foliage reports, as the timing of peak color varies from year to year.
