From the architect: ,new completed barrington1503 The Coliving Project shows how thoughtful design improves community spaces. Los Angeles is experiencing a dramatic increase in the cost of living, exacerbated by the excessive proliferation of single-dwelling homes. On a site that could originally accommodate only a small number of residents, Barrington1503 introduces much-needed density with 18 units and 79 bedrooms. By redefining traditional modes of housing, the project promotes community building, prioritizes healthy living environments, and contributes to making Los Angeles a more hospitable place to live.
“Driven by the growing demand for affordable housing and a strong sense of connectedness among residents, the coliving model is growing rapidly. In this area of West Los Angeles – where there are large numbers of students and an influx of new arrivals – coliving presents a necessary and viable option. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic has underlined, the success of coliving depends on sharing community spaces with well-defined private areas. Depends on balancing. At the heart of Barrington’s 1503 design is the concept of a spatial social gradient. Passing beneath the building’s distinctive frescoes, residents pass through a shared private courtyard and ascend through common circulation paths that guide them upwards. These pathways are more than just roads – they are places of connection, allowing chance encounters and fostering an organic sense of community. Are.
“Each of the four distinct volumes includes communal dining and living spaces, offering semi-private areas before leading into completely private bedrooms. In contrast to the expansive sliding windows and doors of the shared living rooms, which open inwards towards the courtyard, the bedroom windows open outwards, affording individual views of the surrounding city. This dual orientation allows for privacy And the connections enhance both – encompassing the broader urban landscape while maintaining a strong internal community.”
