The IO9 recently caught with Thompson, who shared the original concept art of the figures with us, which celebrates 70 years to discuss his process for figures and their relationships with Disneyland.
Sabina Graves, IO9: Can you explain in detail the inspiration behind your unique interpretation of Sally and Dynamite Gentleman data?
Steve Thompson: I am a fan haunted Mansion Since my first visit to Disneyland in 1980. One of my favorite rooms in attraction is, of course, stretching room and its paintings. With any new project, I never want to repeat myself. We have some very calm collections, jewelry and artwork in the past that are very perfect for pictures characters as you know them. So, the challenge for me was, how do we portray these characters in a new way?
The paintings in the stretching room have been depicted by various artists over the years. As a result, the way they appear have also changed. My view with the design of these idols was to respect the tradition and attract them as I see them. It all started with my early sketch. I would say that my biggest inspiration or jumping-off point Disney was of original paintings by Legend Mark Davis. His painting was fun and a little terrible at the same time – there was magic in the eyes!

IO9: What is your personal relationship with Disneyland and the Haunted Mansion In the last few years?
Thompson: I am going to Disneyland, and like many people growing up in California, Park was always an inspiration for me. This is really a magical place. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to work for Disney as an artist, and being able to visit the park regularly helped to keep that dream alive for me. I can say that I have been so lucky for the last 31 years! haunted Mansion For me all -time great Disney is one of the attractions; Every detail is perfect. I still feel that after all these years there is always something new to find something new.
IO9: In what ways have Disney Parks served as one of your early fandums, and how has you affected the path of your career as a designer?
Thompson: Taking a visit to Disney parks, it seemed to me that anything was possible. Parks were a safe place for me to dream and imagine. You can see the love, talent and craftsmanship that has gone into every detail. As a designer, I always take care that I am one of a long line of artists who have helped keep these characters and stories alive in years. It comes with a true love for great responsibility and source material.
Parks have some of my favorite recent memories, when I am on my own after an art signature or work, making my way through the park and looking at things that I am selling in shops. This is something that I always dreamed of as a child. And the park brings out the child who can take a step back and appreciate it. It always encourages me to see what we are going to design next!
IO9: Beyond specific data, are there any other aspects the Haunted Mansion And the scary weather in parks that especially echo with you creatively?
