Nothing can replace peace of mind when traveling abroad, but some cities are considered safer than others.

“With global uncertainty and safety concerns this year, travelers are more thoughtful than ever about where they want to go,” Carol Mueller, head of marketing for Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, said in a statement shared with T+L.

And while the roads themselves may not be a threat, the report found that travelers still need to keep an eye on volcanic activity in the area around the city.
Beyond Reykjavik, Danish city Copenhagen Reclaimed its spot at number 2 on the list. The report called Copenhagen “more cosmopolitan” than Reykjavik, but said it still “feels pleasant and warm.” According to Berkshire Hathaway, the only part of Copenhagen that could cause problems for tourists is the autonomous region of Christiania, where the company said photography is prohibited and visitors are sometimes robbed for taking pictures.
Zurich came third on the list (after not making the list at all in 2024), followed by Amsterdam and Honolulu rounding out the top five. It was an impressive performance for the Hawaiian city, which jumped from 13th place last year and was praised for its low per capita car ownership and remote location.
When it came to feeling safe across the country, the Netherlands took the top spot, followed by Australia and Austria.
The report identified the most popular international and domestic cities for travelers to the United States and then asked respondents about a number of different safety issues, including violent crime, terrorism, transportation issues, health measures, and the safety of women, the LGBTQIA+ community, and people of color.
