Simply one of the strangest and funniest movies in recent memory, Hundreds of Beavers is set in the 19th century and follows applejack maker Jean Kayak (Ryland Tews), who — looking to impress the holder of his romantic eye — ends up in a conflict with a staggering amount of beavers. Tews is simply mesmeric in this slapstick dark comedy — a movie unlike anything you’re likely to have seen before. Sporting an impressive 97% Rotten Tomatoes score, this is a film you simply have to see to believe. – Jake Hodges

Legally Blonde

Release Date

July 13, 2001

Runtime

Legally Blonde became an instant classic when it premiered in the early aughts and continues to (mostly) hold up as an iconic feminist film. Undeniably quotable and influential to generations, director Robert Luketic’s Legally Blonde is based on a novel by Amanda Brown with a hilarious and touching script from writers Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith. Starring Reese Witherspoon in the role she was born to play, Legally Blonde explores themes of patriarchal oppression, sexual harassment, and power imbalances, as well as appearance-based prejudices. To this day, Legally Blonde stands as a pillar of comedy and romance, with underrated performances from icons like Selma Blair, Victor Garber, and Jennifer Coolidge. – Yael Tygiel

A coming-of-age comedy-drama, Didi was written, directed, and produced by Sean Wang in his directorial debut. Set in 2008 and starring Izaac Wang and Joan Chen, the film follows a Taiwanese-American eighth grader in the early years of social media who uses it as an escape from his underwhelming childhood. But along the way, it also feeds his feelings of internalized racism and personal inadequacy. The film also features Spike Jonze, Stephanie Hsu, and more in supporting roles.

Dìdi premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival to near-universal acclaim, winning the Audience Award: U.S. Dramatic and U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award: Ensemble. The movie was named one of the top 10 independent films of the year by the National Board of Review. A moving and intimate portrayal of childhood angst, the film is both touching and clever. Affectionate and nostalgic in some parts but also intelligent and self-critical, it’s a highly relatable watch for anyone who grew up in the 2000s — and a great indie movie experience even if you didn’t.

Past Lives is an extraordinary examination of rekindling a childhood romance that also serves as an astute look at the immigrant experience and communication within the Internet era. Celine Song’s breathtaking directorial debut focuses on a Korean woman (Greta Lee) who encounters her childhood lover (Teo Yoo) late in life, even though she is happily married to an American husband (John Magaro).

What could have easily been a schmaltzy, superficial love triangle story is instead one of the most profound and intimate romances A24 has ever released. Past Lives takes its time to get to know the characters by observing their everyday lives, allowing the viewer to feel more connected to their decisions. In addition to making a sizeable dent at the independent box office, Past Lives scored Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.

‘The Fall Guy’ (2024)

Rotten Tomatoes: 82% | IMDb: 6.9/10

Loosely based on the eponymous 1980s TV series, The Fall Guy is a 2024 action comedy film directed by David Leitch and written by Drew Pearce. The film stars Ryan Gosling as Colt Seavers, an out-of-work stuntman who gets a second chance when he is hired to work on a movie directed by his ex-girlfriend (Emily Blunt). To make things worse, Colt finds out that the film’s lead actor has disappeared, drawing him into a sinister conspiracy. Besides Gosling and Blunt, the film also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, Stephanie Hsu, and Winston Duke.

The Fall Guy premiered at the 2024 South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, where it received rave reviews from critics. Unfortunately, the film underperformed at the box office, which is a shame because it was easily one of the most entertaining movies of the year. Fundamentally a love story, The Fall Guy blends action, romance, and comedy into a genre-bending thriller that’s appropriately cinematic while retaining a solid plot. Above all else, the movie is a love letter to practical effects and stuntwork that feels especially appropriate at a time when mainstream studio films are increasingly overstuffed with CGI.

‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ (2024)

Rotten Tomatoes: 86% | IMDb: 6.3/10

2024 has been a strong year for the horror genre, with one of its more tame efforts proving just as enticing as the more bombastic offerings. A Quiet Place: Day One is a prequel to the silently terrifying first two entries, telling the tale of the very first days of the invasion from the brand-new point of view of young Sam (Lupita Nyong’o). Despite an enormously high bar set by the first two movies, Day One manages to be both equally as enthralling and unique enough to feel like its own property. Featuring stunning performances from Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, and Nico and Schnitzel as Frodo the cat, this is one of the more underrated flicks from a stand-out year for the horror and thriller genres. – Jake Hodges

The celebrity documentary has become a staple of mainstream viewing over the last few years, with this particular example centering on the life of the Hollywood icon Val Kilmer. From unseen home footage from his childhood to an unfiltered look at his time as an actor from Batman to Top Gun, Val wades through the hundreds of hours of content from his life to cherry-pick a selection of moments that beautifully encapsulate the spectrum of experience of the beloved performer.

Directors Ting Poo and Leo Scott take a saturated genre and breathe new life into it with a storytelling style that feels straight out of an experimental piece. Raw and intimate, no punches are pulled in the depiction of Kilmer’s life, with the movie feeling like both an ode to the actor and a deep dive into some of the dangers of living such a high-profile life. Serving as a producer on the project, Val Kilmer himself adds a genuine sense of memory to the movie, creating an aura of nostalgia that will leave you in contemplative silence as the credits roll. – Jake Hodges
