Tamron has announced the 25-200mm F2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 full-frame lens for Sony mirrorless cameras. The G2 is the successor to the existing 28-200mm F2.8-5.6, which has been updated to go much wider at the wide end of its zoom.
The 8x range means that, even with detail at the widest end, it doesn’t count as a superzoom, but combined with the relatively bright F2.8-5.6 maximum aperture range it gives it a very flexible lens.
The extra coverage at a wider range should increase its usefulness more than make up for the minor 3mm reduction, especially as it comes with almost half the macro (1:1.9) magnification at the 25mm position.
It moves on to use a VXD voice-coil linear motor instead of the rotary stepper motor used in the previous version. The company says this makes it “perfect for capturing play and activities like kids and pets.”
Its 76 mm (3″) diameter is slightly wider than the previous version and its 122 mm (4.78″) length is 5 mm longer, but the G2 version is 1 gram lighter at 575 grams (20.3 oz). Both versions contain 18 elements arranged in 14 groups. It retains the same 67 mm filter thread.
The new, broader version of what Tamron calls its “all-in-one” zoom will retail for around $899, which is about 23% more bang for the buck than the original version that launched in June 2020.
