Local exercise studio Vapor has re -prepared the Western Academy of Primary School in Beijing Library In ChinaMixed elements from children’s stories with traditional Chinese architectural motifs.
To encourage curiosity and exploration, Studio vipore Saw the literature of children around the world for inspiration.
Erica Borsa, founder of Studio Vipore, told Dezen, “From the beginning, we aims to balance the functional needs of a library, which imagines it with a more aspiring goal to make it a place, which nurtures imagination . ” “In fact an inspirational library was to exceed a functional place – it was needed to increase curiosity and surprise.”
“To bring this vision into life, we wrote a bold story,” he continued. “This story became the foundation of the design, which converts space into a three-dimensional story book, where each element contributes to a revelation of search.”
The design attracted China’s architectural heritage, incorporating traditional roof forms and re -interpreted historical color straps.
Calman pink, dark red, dusty blue and muted gold shades referred to the color of ancient temples subtle and “some ‘faded’ reminiscent of the prohibited city”.
The library comes through a series of themed areas that usually introduce the spatial elements found in classic children’s stories, such as maze, caves and forests.
“As we discovered children’s literature, we saw some spatial elements often appear,” Borsa said. “Building the technical foundation of the library, we demanded it to create an immersive environment, which weave these familiar storytelling elements to shape the design.”
“No matter how a child feels a given day, they can find a place that resonated with them,” he continued.
The center of the library has a Tibetan-informed storytelling tower, which serves as a visual anchor and ideological landmark. Rising from a high reading platform, the tower leads to a suspended mesh for informal ceremonies.
“The idea of the tower naturally emerged as we shaped the space,” Borsa explained. “We introduced an elevated platform, and as we lead the ladder to it, the structure took the presence of a tower -a guiding element within the library.”
“Like a lighthouse in a story, it becomes a reference point, some always appears, helping children to orient themselves by sinking themselves into their own literary adventures,” she continued.
A “labyrinth” of modular, circular bookshelves creates a semi-private field for independent reading and small group discussions. Rising above them, a cone -shaped roof provides an attached place to read a temple hut with a roof.
Located at the opposite ends of the library, the area of bamboo forest and village-theme has been rolled with books and facilitates nooks at different heights including caves and spherical pods.
Wooden floors and accents bring a feeling of heat into the space, while a steel spiral ladder that goes to the design classes of the second floor adds an touch contrast.
During the library, the play is included in interactive features such as whisper tubes, periscope, and hidden crystals and the search is encouraged.
Borsa said, “Crystals hidden near the windows put small rainbow on the floor when Prakash kills them properly,” Borsa said.
“We loved the idea that a child could coincidentally notice one, wonder where it came from, and can start looking for the source – a simple walk through the library transform into a small search . “
The studio collaborated to balance the cool study sectors with interactive social locations Delhom achostics To integrate acoustic design components. The panels of the roof panels and recycled panels were strategically placed to reduce the noise levels to hide sound-abusive wool.
Established by Borsa in 2021, the studio Vepor is a Beijing-based studio, which ranges from architectural and internal projects to product and graphic design.
