Spotify has Pur: A new “Managed Accounts” feature for younger audiences. in the beginning powered by Launching last year and today in seven new markets including the US, it allows parents and guardians with the Spotify Premium Family Plan to assign their kids a dedicated profile with their own personalized recommendations and custom playlists.
The idea is that adults can filter explicit content, limit playback of certain artists and hide video playback features. canvasShould they do this? Users with this profile also cannot use interactivity features such as messaging.
Perhaps most importantly for some people, a managed account also ensures that your personal Wrapped Year-end results won’t be dominated by TikTok-viral songs kids have been playing on repeat for months – and they won’t mess with you Weekly Search Algorithms or so. Spotify’s ‘Exit Your Taste Profile’ Speciality already offers a way to keep the crap your kids listen to away from your own recommended content, but this seems like a cleaner option for families.
Standard Spotify Premium features like Daylist and the aforementioned Discover Weekly remain available to anyone using a managed account, making it a better choice for kids interested in music than the Spotify Kids app (they can even connect to the bands you’re listening to in the car), which is largely designed for ‘baby shark‘ Devotees. It’s probably helpful to think of it as a bridge between a managed account and an unrestricted premium account where all the music in the world is at your fingertips.
To set up a managed account, the plan owner must go to their account settings within the Spotify app and select “Add a member”, followed by “Add listener under 13”. The app will provide further instructions from there. As a reminder, the Spotify Premium Family plan requires setting up a managed account. It currently costs $20 per month.
