Sony has released a firmware update that brings its content authenticity solutions to the A7 IV. The company announced Equal update For A1 II, A1 and A9 III in January. However, this is the first time that the equipment to certify images will be available on anything other than high-end, professional-grade cameras.
Software v. 5.00 for Sony A7 IV still adds support for the “Digital Signature” function for images. The function allows photographers to add an electronic signature to their images to prove that they were taken with that camera. Such authenticity tools are becoming increasingly important with increasing proliferation of liberal AI-made imagery and, as a result, spreading fake images.
Of course, with updates for three pro-grade cameras in January, some caviates include. Digital signature function requires a payment license and it is only available for some media outlets, not to the general public. Unfortunately, Soni has still not given any additional information when it is available to general consumers or when. On the firmware update page, Sony says that “the time is yet to be fixed for the provision of the license paid to other customers other than some media outlets.”
Even though the current purpose is limited, Sony has a step in the right direction to roll it to the consumer model. If the Sony provides the feature beyond media outlets more widely, the digital signature feature will already be on cameras and will be ready for use.
