What you need to know
Product Photos: Sony
As you have seen, Sony has refreshed her full-frame compact, RX1R, coming with Mark III after the last decade. The new version is packed with the latest techniques of Sony, but it is also so close to the original concept that a lot of risks are also visible.
We have already seen how the RX1R III pile up against the cheap, the A7CR is stabilized, but this does not tell the whole story. Sometimes the focus of compactness and the purpose of a certain-lens camera is sufficient to justify a premium on an interchangeable lens camera. But € 4900, a list value of £ 4200 and, in particular, $ 5100, is quite premium.
We look closely on what we provide RX1R III, what it provides and where it sits relative to its predecessors and rivals.
Original glasses
At its core, RX1R III is exactly the update you expect, if you were familiar with Sony’s latest internal. It is built around an excellent 60.2MP sensor, by chance, also reduces more expensive Leica Q3 and Q3 43 models.
It uses the same 35 mm F2 Zeiss-branded lenses as all other RX1 models with the same staper-motorized focus system.
Like Mark II, it has a built-in electronic viewfinder, but is now fixed in the corner of the body instead of pop-up design. In the need to keep the camera small, Sony has been limited to the 2.36 meter dot (1024 x 768px) EVF panel, which is a jerky imagination on this expensive camera.
Like the previous RX1 cameras (and the first five recurrents of the X100 series of Fujifilm), there is no stabilization system. The body is re -designed, with a greasy front panel and dial is converted into a top plate, but the basic principles of the camera are roughly unchanged.
Updated autofocus
In terms of both performance and operations, Sony’s AF system has been improved in a decade since the launch of the RX1R II, and we are used for reliable subject recognition and very difficult trekking. Like other high-end models of Sony, the RX1R III contains a dedicated processor to reduce the additional complexity of these machine-learning-type algorithms.
However, the focus group of the RX1 is not the fastest proposal, which risk the top-end performance of the camera. We will update this article in the coming days, once we have to mean how much capacity it is capable of distributing.
This is a setback to feel the RX1R II’s clunk “Center Lock-on AF” system, which was recently ten years ago, which we have seen.
Price and status
The price tag on RX1R III is somewhat going to water -watery eyes, if you compare it with anything other than the Q3 twins of Leica, but this series has always been a halo product.
The original RX1 felt like Sony “we understand photography” described as as expected to move units or make a profit to evacuate a product. Even at the point of very low price, we considered if it was trying to become a modern leak (this earlier the Q series shows us that a real leaika full-frame compact cost).
The first RX1 pre-dated the company’s full-frame ILCs, and cost more commendable than the high resolution A7R when launched a year later. The price of RX1R II was very close to the cost of contemporary A7R II model, but they have always been priced in a premium.
He said, if you compare the RX1 UK launch prices with the Fujifilm X100 version at that time, you will see that the first two RX1 models were 2.3x more expensive than contemporary X100s, and RX1R II and III are about 2.6X more expensive. Which, you receive a sensor around 2.4x large, suggests that they are not out with the rest of the market.
Price: We and beyond that
The price in the US, however, is perforated, for the reasons you must have heard of, in the news. Given the prices of the launch of the previous Sony model over the last ten years, we found that the UK launch price (Incl. VAT) is about 20% more than the US launch price, if you then use the prevailing exchange rate. This is in part, because prices are more easily soft in the UK market: the clear premium is essentially an early-medium tax that goes away after a few months.
However, from the same calculation you will expect the US launch around $ 4700, if you only reduce the UK 20% and use the current exchange rate. It, and the 3.2x premium on the X100VI (vs. 2.6X for RX1R II at X100T), helps explain why the American price especially looks so high.
High raj sensor
Sony has made some significant changes compared to the previous model. The largest of these is a step of 60.2MP from a 42MP sensor. It can be a chip that we have seen earlier, but this image is one of the best sensors in terms of quality, which we have ever encountered.
The first RX1R model was a version of the RX1 that had no less-pas (anti-aliasing) filters. The RX1R II had an innovative design that placed an LCD panel in the middle of the low-pass filter. AA filters work by refracting the light differently, depending on their orientation. Attaching the LCD layer will cause light polarization and determine whether the second layer of the filter doubled or the effect of the first layer was canceled.
There is no such cleverness in RX1R III, so you lose the ability to attach the AA filtering effect as you can do on Mark II. However, the high resolution of the sensor of RX1R III means that the overising will only be with high frequency patterns, even more likely to be interrupted by the lens, anyway, anyway.
Big battery
The new camera also receives a larger battery, 7.3Wh NP-FW50 battery compared to its predecessor. This helps address one of the most constant criticisms of the series, which was known to offer relatively low shooting periods from its compact 4.5Wh NP-B1 battery.
The new battery is doubled in the previous model (18.5 mm, 18.5 mm instead of 9.2 mm). Despite this, the new camera is not commendably darker than the current one, measuring just 2.5 mm more than its predecessor with the body.
The new camera also has a USB-C socket and is compatible with the USB power delivery protocol, allowing it to charge or operates on the USB socket if you have sufficiently powerful exterior charger or battery pack.
Vs Lika Q3
The most obvious direct competitive for Sony RX1R III is LEica’s Q3 cameras, the original Q3 with its 28 mm F1.7 lens and Q3 43 with its 43 mm F2 lens. They let you choose that you want a broad-angle lens or a common perspective instead of 35 mm of RX1R III, which divides the difference. They also provide stabilization, which lack Sony.
Both cameras are based around the same sensor in the form of Sony, but both have a large format 5.98m dot OLED Viewfinders (at most, with 0.79x with magnification) and tilting rear screens, where RX1R III is fixed. They are also commendably larger cameras than Sony, as shown above. They are largely heavy, tipping the scales at 743G with Q3, with batteries and memory cards: 49% of the RX1R III.
In addition, they are both more expensive cameras. If you want to see what the premium pricing looks in this type of camera, then let your eyes a party and lock your wallet when you see $ 6735 and $ 7380 price tag hanging from leaka.
A more practical option can be A7CR and a suitable prime lens. This is a comparison we saw in more depth, the second day.
EVF and screen
The two biggest points of the dispute, beyond its pricing, are its visible and its rear screen specifications. Sony’s focus is on keeping the size of the camera down.
As a result of the body already deepening, as a result of adopting a large battery, the company has clearly decided that in addition to a clear screen, wholesale will compromise its compactness. There are several successful fixed-lenses with fixed screen (not at least four x100 cameras), but sometimes, especially for the waist-level shooting, when a tilt screen is useful. If you like to shoot, you have to choose a big camera option.
Leaf Shutter and Hotshu
Other factors worth remembering are that, like most fixed lens cameras, RX1R III has an in-lens ‘leaf’ shutter. This essentially gives a global shutter effect, allowing flash sink throughout the shutter speed range, but with the disadvantage that its maximum shutter speed decreases because you reach near the widest aperture setting of the camera. F5.6 falls at 1/4000 seconds to 1/3200 seconds to F4 and 1/2000 F2. There is an e-shitter mode that allows shooting up to 1/8000 on any aperture, but 100ms (1/10 second) readout rate means that it is better for static subjects.
The camera has a hotsho, which is useful to increase a flash, but is characterized by a multi-interface pin that lets you add MIC and channel digital audio to the camera. Like the A7CR, the small body of RX1R III watchs limited videos to 4K/30 (the sensor can give 8K resolution, although with a lot of rolling shutter). It has all the latest Sony video gifts including uploadable luts, S-cineetone and 10-bit log capture. RX1R II, comparatively, top-out on 8-bit 1080.
Summary
Sony DSC-RX1R III is the update that we were not sure that we will see anytime, and this is a pleasant surprise in many cases. Fixed-pose viewer is more easily accessible than the pop-up unit in Mark II, 60.2MP BSI CMOS sensor has proved itself excellent and the new model addresses one of our greatest criticisms of previous models: Battery Life. It is also promising to adopt a host of Sony’s latest characteristics and functions.
However, the step for a certain screen seems like a regressive step and we are disappointed that they could not find room for an FAU joystick given the complete redirection of the body.
The RX1 chain has always been a Halo product, which has taken over a premium for the causes of reputation as well as the causes of miniatoryization, but its current value, especially in the US, is still brought to relief from the existence of the Quite-Sames A7CR, especially in Sony’s own lineup.
If you like a certain-lens camera and compactness is a major benefit for you, it is difficult to think about a camera that promises such image quality with such a small package. But there is a price, both metaphors and financial, to be paid for that totality.
