Architecture studio Mon Has broken the ground on a new terminal Chicago O’He International Airport And have released unseen rendering of their design with “Orchard-induced columns” informed by midwestern rivers and curved structural elements.
The team broke the land on Concourse D today, designed by a building Mon in collaboration with Rousse barney architects, Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects (JGMA)And ArupAs part of a large, multi-year expansion to the airport, which the team called “the first building in the most ambitious expansion of the airport”.
The airport terminal 5 was expanded in 2023, but has not seen any major project since the 1990s.
As part of groundbreaking, SOM has released new rendering of its interior, published by a multi-level Okulus There is a curved ceiling feature at one end and along the length of the building.
Som design partner Scott Duncan said, “Our vision for the new concores considers the entire passenger journey to the gate.”
“From the skylit spaces to the orchard-inspired column, each element contributes to a bright, easy-to-navigate environment designed to increase travel experience and leave a permanent impression of o’Hre.”
The interior rendering shows a spherical location line with two Megenines And the top with an Oculus.
Retail stores and routes hug the perimeter and seating space and planting interior.
Somewhere else in the Concourse, white, structural support beams go out to support a curved roof.
According to the team, the system reduces vertical support and “was also informed by gardens who once gave their name to the airport”, while the embodied carbon also decreased.
Other render shows seating areas leaving the southern end of the terminal, which ends in a large, curved glass curtain wall.
According to the team, the curvature lines of Concourse were informed by the “Oxbo Fold of Midwestern Rivers”.
Concourse D will serve as a “node” among several intersection elements, such as a new underground tunnel which would be associated with the Concourse E building, designed by the same team.
It will also be connected to the O’He Global Terminal on its other side, Another new building for the project designed by the studio gangWhich directly connects to the main body of the airport.
Constress D sits between these two new buildings.
It is expected to be completed in 2028 through a partnership between Som -led design team, Chicago city and at risk construction manager at risk Malevolent Hunt Cleco Bowa.
According to the SOM, the planning work on Concourse E is also “running”, and it is expected to open in the stages starting in 2029.
Recently, projects passed through rebranding. First, Concourse D was known as Satellite Concourse One, and Concourse E was known as Satellite Concourse Two,
According to Chicago Yimbi, the studio gang terminal will be worked on.
