The American-born retail magnet Harry Gordon Selfrids were claimed to be on a mission to convert purchases into a pleasant experience when they opened their Oxford Street Emporium in 1909. In consumer goods as well as the first attractions to be displayed in the store, it was an airplane in which the aviation pioneer Louis Blueot created the first flight in the English channel.
