Smash Burger Tacos (Japanese BBQ Style)

I’m back with another version of the viral-inspired Smash Burger Tacos recipe! I can’t wait for you to try these – they’re packed with flavor with a Japanese barbecue twist that’s bold, easy, and perfect for weeknights or entertaining.

You all liked it very much Street Corn Smash Burger Tacos So dangerous, that I had to go back to the test kitchen and create another flavor variation that would be just as fiery as fire, so without further ado, let’s break these down Japanese BBQ Smash Burger Tacos So that you can make them for your family ❤️.

  • A fun flavor twist on the viral classic Smash Burger Taco recipe
  • Easy to make and very tasty!
  • You just need 6 ingredients.

Smash Burger Taco Trend

The smash burger taco trend isn’t new, but it originally started on TikTok a few years ago with Big Mac-style smash burger tacos. You’ll crumble the ground beef directly onto the tortilla and then crisp it on both sides and top with your favorite Big Mac toppings – shredded lettuce, pickles, American cheese, and a burger sauce,

This trend definitely lives up to the hype IMO, so the team and I created a street corn variation that you all loved. And now I am back with this Japanese BBQ flavor variation. This is great.

Materials you will need

  • Ground beef: I like the flavor of ground beef for these tacos, but I’ve tested with both ground turkey and ground chicken and both of these options work great. Just know that turkey and chicken will shrink more when cooked on a tortilla because they are both lean meats.
  • Japanese-Style BBQ Sauce: There are lots of great options for Japanese barbecue available at major grocery stores in the U.S. I like Bachan and used it for this recipe.
  • Street Taco Flour Tortilla: Street Tacos sized tortillas are perfect for smash burger tacos! Why? This is the perfect size for breaking the meat to the sides of the tortilla.
  • Asian Salad Dressing: Similar to Japanese BBQ, there are plenty of great store-bought alternatives. I love Target’s Good & Gather Asian-Style Sesame Vinaigrette.
  • Kewpie Mayonnaise: Kewpie adds just the right amount of creaminess to the slaw. I like to add a little extra drizzle to my decorated tacos right before serving, yum.
  • Coleslaw Mix: Any store-bought slaw mix will work. I like to use a combination of different colors of cabbage + shredded carrots for great crunch and variety of color.
A collage of food.

Don’t forget your cast iron!

To get that perfect char on your Smash Burger Tacos, I highly recommend using a cast iron griddle. The pan’s intense heat and even distribution will give your tacos a deliciously crispy edge. If you don’t have a cast iron pan, you can also use a regular frying pan or grill.

How to Make This Smash Burger Tacos Recipe

  1. Prepare the burger meat: Add the ground beef and Japanese BBQ sauce to a bowl and stir together. Form 2 tablespoon sized meatballs.
  2. Press burger meat onto tortilla: Take each meatball and press it into each tortilla, making sure to spread the meat as thinly as possible until it reaches the edge.
  3. Cook the burger meat: Place the tortilla meat side down in the pan and cook for 2 minutes. Flip the tacos and cook an additional 30 seconds to brown the tortilla.
