Safeway announced this in a letter on Tuesday San Francisco Mayor London Breed It will close a location in the city after suffering theft.
The letter states that Safeway has decided to close its location in Fillmore, a neighborhood in San Francisco, “due to ongoing concerns about associate and customer safety, as well as persistent issues of theft,” noting current employees. The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) recently announced that officers have arrested eight teenage retail suspects who they believe are responsible for 23 incidents at various Walgreens stores in the Bay Area.

“We are committed to serving San Francisco at our remaining 15 locations, and to ensuring that our unionized workforce can do their jobs in a safe and secure work environment,” Safeway said.
Some members of the community have said they will oppose the store’s closing, including the Rev. Aris Edgerly.
“It’s clear the community is struggling, but to get up and leave without calling a meeting with no options for groceries is disturbing,” Edgerly told the San Francisco Chronicle. “There was no community outreach at all.”
“It’s going to have a big impact. I was hoping they would at least come to the table and say, ‘This is the issue, let’s resolve it,'” he said.

“As a business with more than 255 stores in Northern California, we make these difficult decisions and we don’t take them lightly,” Safeway Stores said. “We appreciate the time and resources you have invested in helping us find a way to remain open, but unfortunately, the challenges are too great to overcome.”
Breed, who lost her re-election bid in November to Levi Strauss successor Daniel Lurie, said she was “saddened” by Safeway’s decision.
Safeway and Breed’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment. fox news digital,
San Francisco Supervisor Dean Preston also reportedly spoke out in light of Safeway’s announcement that it would close its Fillmore location.
“I believe the best path to guaranteeing a future grocery store and affordable housing at this former redevelopment site is for the city to begin negotiations to acquire this site,” Preston said.
