Puppy Chow was one of my favorite treats growing up – melted peanut butter, chocolate and powdered sugar. My favorite part was always putting all the ingredients in a brown paper bag and shaking like crazy until all of the Chex mixture was coated in peanut butter goodness.

I also love it when ingredients come together to create big pieces of deliciousness. This recipe is an improved version of that childhood puppy chow, we omit the powdered sugar for delicious protein powder.

You only need 5-ingredients to make this recipe. Grab a box of Chex cereal, chocolate chips, coconut oil, peanut butter, and protein powder and you’re all set.

Top Tips for Protein Puppy Chow

  • Use a large paper bag: To make sure each Chex is covered with protein powder, we highly recommend putting the peanut butter and chocolate covered Chexes in a large paper bag. Add protein powder to the bag and roll it from top to bottom. Stir the mixture until all the Chex is covered with protein powder.
  • Protein powder quantity: Relies on protein powder and peanut butter If using it, you may need to add more protein powder to the mixture. Different protein powders will absorb differently into the peanut butter and chocolate mixture.

What to serve with protein puppy chow?

Serve this protein puppy chow with other delicious Protein treats. we recommend

  • Add chocolate chips, peanut butter, and coconut oil to a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave the mixture in 20 second increments, stirring after each addition, until the mixture is melted and shiny. This will take about 2 minutes.

  • Pour 3 cups of Chex into the bottom of a large bowl. Drizzle melted peanut butter and chocolate halves over top of the checks. Fold the ingredients together until coated.

  • Add the remaining checks and cover with the remaining melted peanut butter and chocolate. Fold until the second layer is coated. It’s okay if the pieces of checks are stuck together.

  • Leave the mixture in the bowl or transfer it to a paper bag to coat the checks with the protein powder. Add ½ cup protein powder to the mixture and if it is in a bowl, stir gently until it is coated with the protein powder. Add another half cup of protein powder and toss again. If using a paper bag, pour all the protein powder into the bag. Roll up the top and shake the bag until the checks are coated.

  • Allow the puppies to cool before storing them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
