The poop emoji also appears, along with other examples of excrement shown in graphic imagery throughout history.
Exhibition curators Taku Sato and Shinichi Takemura wanted to promote a more circular approach to waste.
“People rarely pay attention to the next step of things that get washed or thrown in the trash,” Satoh said. “As soon as an entity leaves our body, even if it was a part of us until a moment ago, we consider it dirty.”
Takemura added, “Essentially, there is no such thing as waste or excrement.”
“In the wild of nature, dead bodies or animal feces become resources for other life forms.”
The show spans two galleries of the 21_21 design site.
The first is a one-of-a-kind collection, containing over 700 objects and artefacts that refer to “waste and excrement”.
It contains 190 different types of soil, a collection of fossils and shells, various exhibits related to toilets, different types of body waste, products made from excrement and objects related to fermentation.
The second gallery explores how design can change our relationship with waste, showcasing projects that use waste materials in inventive ways.

Another installation by Ihara consists of wall panels made from earthworm castings, while the ceramicist Toshio Matsui Presents a project that gives new life to broken and discarded ceramic pots.

The curators hope to show how trash can become a valuable resource, as it has been in the past.
“Humans are not the only or first creature to influence the functioning of the Earth,” Takemura said. “But we are the first to have an awareness that allows us to direct change in the future.”
“We are now on a journey to rediscover the ‘intelligence’ demonstrated in the planet’s biological systems.”
“We now begin to partner with many entities in and around us, in addition to advancing our industrial circular economy,” he concluded.
Pooploop is not the first exhibition to focus on new uses for excrement. The Nieuwe Institute in Rotterdam explores this idea from different perspectives new store Pop-up, while Italy’s Museo Della MerdaOr the Shit Museum, dedicated entirely to the possible uses of feces.
