I never imagined that such a thing as a defining moment could exist in such a peaceful discipline as photographing turtles on land. Capturing a Galapagos giant tortoise munching on a mandarin under the glare of the setting sun proved quite a challenge. I wish you lots of defining moments in the coming week – and, like the turtle in the photo, don’t forget to keep up with your daily dose of vitamins. Now, let’s take a look at this week’s photography news roundup.
Recent Announcements
- Laowa 200mm f/2 AF FF:Laova continues its youth series of autofocus lenses with a real shocker, the 200mm f/2 with autofocus! This lens will be available for Sony E, Nikon Z and Canon EF. The real shock is the price of $1999 (Nikon Z and Sony E) or $1799 (Canon EF). The lens weighs approximately 1600 grams/3.5 pounds and has a nearly perfect theoretical MTF chart. Will it perform well in reality? We look forward to bringing you a test as soon as our copy arrives. The lens ships in November.
- macbook pro 14″ And ipad pro With M5 chips: A new version of Apple’s ultra-popular MacBook Pro 14″ and iPad Pro will arrive with an M5 chip later this week. Apple promises the longest battery life ever in a Mac laptop (up to 24 hours) and very fast processing for some tasks. In particular, Apple highlights that AI-related devices can perform up to 6 times faster than the M1 chip. Prices start at $1599 for MacBook Pro 14″ M5 And $999 for iPad Pro M5,
- Viltrox AF 50mm f/1.4 FE Pro:Viltrox’s “Pro” lenses have been really impressive so far, and the prices couldn’t be better. This newly-announced 50mm f/1.4 autofocus lens is currently only available for the Sony FE, but it looks to challenge high-end glasses like the Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM at a significantly lower price ($549 vs. $1448). The AF 50mm f/1.4 Pro features an all-metal construction with weather sealing, an aperture ring, and a USB-C port for firmware updates. It weighs 800 grams and has an 11-bladed circular aperture diaphragm. You can pre-order it in b&h or order this On the Wiltrox website,

More about the Canon EOS R6 Mark III
Last week, we brought you rumors that a third edition of Canon’s R6 is expected to arrive in November. Now we have more details (still rumors) about what the specifications could be. First of all, the release date is no longer predicted to be November 26, as Canon Rumors reported last week, but rather November 6! It is expected to have a 32 MP or 34 MP sensor, pre-capture with 40 fps electronic shutter and be priced around $2900. There are rumors of dual SD card slots, and also a full-sized HDMI port. Will all this prove to be true? At least we won’t have to wait long to find out.

Zeiss’s work with Otus isn’t over yet
Next week, joining the Zeiss Otus ML 50mm f/1.4 and the Zeiss Otus ML 85mm f/1.4, we’ll see a third Otus – at least, that’s the rumor. Unfortunately, there are no rumored specifications yet, not even focal length. Zeiss previously created the Otus series for DSLRs with a 28mm and 100mm version. Those focal lengths seem most likely (and I’m expecting 28mm at the most).

Eye-control AF may appear on Sony
This is what happens when a new patent from Sony goes somewhere! The viewfinder of Canon’s EOS R3 and EOS R1 already has eye-controlled autofocus. This feature allows the camera’s autofocus system to lock onto whatever subject the photographer sees through the viewfinder. Sony’s patent describes a system that should be smaller and lighter than Canon’s implementation, with its system limited to measuring a small area around the photographer’s pupil.

Often, the best thing about a new Apple product announcement isn’t the new product itself; This is where the previous generation goes on sale. Here are the relevant deals I found on M4 and M3 Macs:
SSD and memory card deals
Storage devices often go on sale, and if you need to buy a larger memory card or SSD, you may want to wait until Black Friday for a wider range of deals to choose from. However, if you can’t wait I found the sale below very tempting:

Is there a comet photographer here? Now is a rare opportunity to take more than one of these photos in a short period of time! Typically, Comet Lemmon is most visible from now until October 23 (October 21, the new moon, is an ideal time to catch it), and Comet Swan – which is fainter – makes its closest approach on October 20. Read more on Live Science For how to see them. And if you miss these comets due to poor viewing conditions, there may be another chance next month when Comet 3I/ATLAS will get close to you! It’s extremely unusual to see so many bright comets in such a short time frame, so now is the perfect time to brush up on your Milky Way photography skills and capture some great photos.

We had so many great photos this week, and it was hard to narrow them down. I’d like to start with this photo from our reader Jason (not Jason Pollack!), who sent in a great photo of a White-breasted Nuthatch leaving a tree branch:
A great photo and a very moving moment!
Next is a photo by PRG Lagarde, who captured a beautiful bird in flight at just the right moment:
Now for a photo from Danny, who captured this photo of a Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill with a beautiful backlit bill:
And finally, we end the week with the following lovely “Birdscape” from Andrew Gusev:
