Photographer and artist Red 15 -year -old Canon Powershot A490 compact camera turned into an impressively capable camera. The camera, which was launched for more than $ 100 in 2010, provides surprisingly good image quality, at least after hacking.
Red Shared His hacked camera on the redit earlier this week displays the impressive raw image of the camera.
Red wrote on Redit, “I hacked an old canon point and shot to shoot from 2010 and was shot and blown out of results.”
The Canon Powershot A490 has a small type of 1/2.3 CCD sensor which is paired with a built-in 37–122 mm (equivalent) f/3-5.8 lenses. The $ 100 compact camera lacks several features out of the box, including the ability to capture raw photos – it only supports JPEG. At least a little before tampering.

The photographer says that there are “many ways” to get CHDK on a compatible canon powershot camera, but he opted to use a free device called Chimp.
“You all format the SD card of your choice, take a picture with the camera that you want to hack and load it on the SD card and throw it into the reader connected to your PC and throw it into the chimp,” Red tells. “Chimp will then use that picture to identify things like firmware version and camera model, so that you can automatically download the correct version of CHDK for SD card for your camera! Then all you have to do is to do the card in the camera with the right protection lock set, ‘and boom! Now you have a hack camera!”
Red says that he bought the camera a few days before posting the Redit and hacked it on the first night after purchasing from the owner of the film lab.

“I had very little experience with this camera and in fact it was my first compact ‘Digi’ Cam, but I had a widespread experience using a hacked bridge point-end-shab camera called Canon SX 40 HS, and it was a similar process to hack using CHDK,” Red tells “Red.
“This camera had crossed my expectations, when I was able to shoot photos of raw, especially wildlife, because the camera has a crazy amount of zoom!”
A490 processes wide in-camera processing at JPEGS, resulting in images with default settings, which has a highly digital appearance, especially in challenging or low-illuminated conditions.
However, raw files, which opens easily in raw photo editing software such as literoom, require only a slight rejection, but otherwise an impressive amount of flexibility is offered for such compact cameras. Red also notes that photographs require certain lens reforms, which are otherwise cooked in JPEG images.
“The great thing about raw files is that they are a ‘digital’ negative, an untouched pure representation that sees the sensor, and this gives you the ability to overcome the results, as much as you will already be able to compress and processed JPG,” says Red. “You are able to get the best camera that can give you.”
While raw files rarely look great out of the camera, especially with something like the A490, Red says that he loves the creative control and process of editing photos.
“This is the process and journey for the end result I like,” photographers explain, which they also love analog photography, a large part of it.
“For me, there is nothing like getting beautiful results from hardware, where expectations are very rare,” red continues. “It reminds me of a quotation that I once heard,” The surprising thing about the dancing bear is not how well it dances, but it dances at all. ” For me, the amazing thing about photography is that something beautiful is getting beautiful regardless of the boundaries of the equipment you use, and I think it is far more satisfactory to get good pictures than good photos from a great camera! ,
Red admitted that he is still new to photography, but he is an explosion because he learns ropes.
“Normally photography is very new to me! I started around May of this year and just the hyper fixed and the headfresp in hobbies,” tells Red. They have obtained some immediate cameras, including poleroid go, Instax Mini Evo and even a poleroid SX -70. The gear acquisition syndrome sets rapidly.

“I fell in love with working around the boundaries of the immediate film and working to get great shots. I fell in love with the process of photography,” says Red.

“Entering photography was very big for my overall mental health and good.
Photography is a great opportunity for people to creatively express itself and experience the world around them. With a bit of inexpensive point-end-shoot cameras and hacking, people can come into photography without breaking the bank, image quality or creative possibilities without renouncing which are often reserved for high-end, expensive cameras. With some tampering and patience, even entry-level point-and-shoot cameras may give some impressive results.
