As a new member of the DPReview team, I’ve had many opportunities to further my photography this year. Part of this involved finding a wide range of subjects to photograph while testing the camera and lenses; A necessary process to make sure we really know the gear inside and out, and we’re not boring our readers – or ourselves – with the same old photos over and over again.
I was tasked with taking a sample gallery with the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 for the Canon RF mount shortly before planning a weekend rock climbing trip, so it seemed obvious that I should take the lens with me. Should go and try to take some interesting shots.
This wasn’t my first attempt at mountaineering photography: I’ve taken many photos of friends climbing cold routes. However, they usually prove to be uninspiring as I pick them up from the ground. This time my goal was to get an angle that truly captured the experience. If I could do this without hitting the camera and lens on a rock or falling to my death, that would be even better.

Although I had a lot of fun setting up and actually taking the photos, I don’t think jimmy chin He’ll have to start worrying about his job soon. There are too many shots where either my hand or my foot got stuck in the frame, ruining what would have otherwise been a good photo.
It can be difficult to evaluate your own work objectively. When choosing this photo – and the runners-up are included in the gallery below – I often found myself wondering whether I liked a photo because it was really good or whether I wanted to choose it just because of my attachment to it. Had good memories or just took a photo of something cool that I love looking at.
Undoubtedly, the photo I have chosen for this article is somewhat of a mixture of these three – certainly, I will have fond memories of a weekend spent pursuing a hobby in which I changed a large part of my personality. Has given. with. However, I think it stands on its own, and I plan to do more climbing photography in the future with the hopes of increasing the percentage of keepers.
And besides, if I were choosing my favorite photo of the year based solely on what made me the happiest, you’d just get a gallery full of photos of my cats.
