Boulder The public library issued an open request for a proposal for a new branch library in North Boulder in 2018, a project that the community had extended by the community for more than two decades. RFP called for a “iconic” building, which many contestants interpreted as a blind striking design. Andros and Wood have always been deeply committed to issues in education, a dedication that ended in the role of Andros as Dean of Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Prevention (GSPP) at Columbia University, where Dan Wood is an Associate Additional Professor. At the time when the project was commissioned, his Kev Garden Hills Library in Queens, NY recently opened, a source of pride for his community, and his Harshit Miami Museum Garage – which turns the simple and often disappointing work of car parking into an unexpected opportunity for social interactions – reached a comprehensive international counterpart.
Inherent in community engagement – Answer Boulder The library is located within a diverse neighborhood that mixes new growth for young professionals, art studios, galleries and two manufactured domestic communities including Boulder’s largest Spanish speaking population. The chosen site is a triangular plot for three miles in the west and in the south by Broadway, with amazing views of boulder flaterons. Workack’s approach to the project was deeply inherent in community engagement.
Workack worked for about eight years on the project, including three -year community engagement and site planning process, which enters more than twenty public presentations of design during various stages for community groups, politicians and stakeholders. Site, Program and Architecture – The unique geographical location of the boulder at the intersection of Rocky Mountains and Great Plans has historically shaped its rugged architectural vicular. The building interacts on the triangular site consisting of a seasonal creek, running diagonally with a building, which respects the scale of its residential neighbors to the north during the south and west of the Flatirone Mountains and Rocky Mountain Futahils. The library is designed with major community locations on the second floor. The lower northern side integrates a shallow, fully accessible ramp that allows these second floor community and ESL classes to open at night when the library is closed, strengthening the role of the library as a community center. This ramp is extended by a public art installation by the Montreal-based daily tus lace magazines that climb or descend to users. The interior design includes custom elements such as a wallpaper by graphic designer Andrew Freeman, which are principals in the Afreman, including historical photographs from the Boulder’s Archives, celebrating the indigenous heritage of the region. The exposed roof structure of the building combines the acoustic performance and beauty prosperity of the space.
The architecture of the workack is both informal and inspiring. It symbolizes the spirit of freedom that invites people to join with space and get ownership of it. This approach shows an intensive commitment to civil responsibility. The stability is a central meditation of the project, in which initial plans are targets for pure-zero energy. Although some characteristics were scalled back due to Covid-19 epidemic and later economic challenges, the strict stability rules of the boulder ensured that the library maintained its high green building standards. A roof supplies a significant part of the energy of the solar array building, while the site includes a rainwater gardens planted with native, butterfly-attractive flowers and shrubs to protect seasonal creek from runoff.
