On February 13, 2025, Nikon announced its latest Z mount lens: Nikon Z 28–135 mm F/4 PZ. In $ 2600, it is a very specific lens, but it also represents an exciting new step for Nikon in the scope of videography. What should you know here?

In addition to these physical specifications, Nikon Z 28–135 mm F/4 PZ has several handling-related characteristics that correspond to videography. Focus and zoom rings are contained for compatibility with follow-focus accessories. The lens is sewn for use with the high-raz zoom feature found on Nikon Z8 and Z9, allowing you to zoom from 28 mm (equal to a crop of 270 mm) while maintaining 4K quality. Nikon designed 28–135 mm F/4 PZ to zoom internal and maintain the same distribution of weight at various focal lengths, making it a natural fit for video gimbals.
For power zoom capacity only, it allows for some useful features that are not found on other nicon lenses. First, the zoom lever on the edge of the lens allows you to zoom very easily (11 on any of the pre-selective speeds). In addition, Nikon says that with camera firmware updates, it will be possible to adapt the zoom ring angle and rotation direction. And it will also be possible to control zoom operation from a computer or phone using NX Tether, NX Field, or Snapbridge.
Raid
The Z 28–135 mm F/4 pz lens is a new step for Nikon, and a large one-specially with their acquisition of red last year. It shows that Nikon sees high-ended videos as one of their future business, and they also see Z Mount as being able to join the current PL and EF Mount Lens I dominate that place.
It is particularly clear that this lens was paired with the announcement of Red Komodo-X and V-Rapter X, the first camera from Red with Nikon Z Mount. 28-135 mm f/4 pz, then, either, either a hybrid stil/video lens is understood (paired with something like Nikon Z8 or Z9), or a dedicated, high-ended cine As part of the setup.
For videography, the biggest negative aspect that I see is 28–135 mm f/4 pz parfocal-in second words, the focus point of this lens will change to some extent as it is zoom. Nikon seems to have preferred focus breathing instead, so if you want to maintain the focus point while zoom, you will need to compensate with constant autofocus or manually draw the focus.
This is not ideal, although for many types of videography, focus breathing will be a big concern than a lens that is not parfocal. But for styles like documentary videography or even accidental YouTube-type videos, a parfocal zoom can be very helpful. I look forward to testing how close the Nikon Z 28–135 mm F/4 PZ is actually so close, and whether the continuous autofocus is able to place with major changes in the focal length on this lens.
Finally, if you are purely a photographer, I do not think it is a possibility of a lens for you. This video is designed keeping in mind the features, where both handling and optics are concerned, and the result is quite large and expensive lenses. Although optical construction includes many of the best techniques of Nikon, most of it is in the service of a lens that zoom internal and does not have a significant focus in breathing. It is an open question in a laboratory environment like Nikon Z 24-120mm F/4S, and I will not be surprised if there is no answer. Of course, I am eager to test and find out!
