Other is a brand new horror film directed by David Morrow, a true master of creepy vibes. It is the follow-up film to his directorial debut MadsBut don’t expect the same frantic pace. Other is a slow, thoughtful and genuinely thrilling exploration of personal trauma. Are you ready to face the demons of your past?
plot
Other It begins with a young woman named Alice (Olga Kurylenko) as she returns to her childhood home following the sudden death of her estranged mother. Exploring the long empty rooms of her childhood home, stopping in time, she also confronts the dark corners of her past. Isolated in a house full of bad memories, she begins to suspect that she is not alone.
hook
While watching the film, there will definitely be a moment when you realize that director David Morrow has done something very different OtherIn a film about isolation and self-discovery, he chose to only show the face of the main character, Alice, in full. All other faces (except one) are either covered, out of focus, or fragmented.
I asked him about this aspect in an upcoming interview with Fourth Take OtherDavid said, “I think it was when I saw panic RoomI thought it was great that we could actually be in this panic room with this mom and a baby. We’re just watching videos of people who have trained to be in it… I always find myself more engaged with movies in that genre where I don’t really watch too much. And where can I give the audience an opportunity to use their imagination, you know?”
good creepy vibes
Other Blurs the line between haunted house and monster movie. David Morrow doesn’t rely too heavily on jump scares to create scares. Instead, he creates an atmosphere of constant unease using clever cinematography, lighting, and especially the sound design.
When asked about sound design OtherDavid told me, “My favorite part of making films is working with sound, especially in this genre. It can be very interesting and add so much tension to a simple scene when you actually hear something that you don’t see.
problems
I enjoyed most aspects of it OtherBut there was one issue in the film that stood out to me. Although the film does a pretty good job of hiding the faces of all but a few characters, the audio dubbing of those characters doesn’t always match up with what we’re seeing. Whether it was performances that didn’t quite match or voices that didn’t seem to be in the same room with the actors, I found it distracting.
who should see Other,
Other A horror film that slowly engulfs you in fear. It begins with a mystery that grows more disturbing as the truth is revealed. It may be somewhat hit and miss, just like other horror movies, but the execution and stylistic choices can make you feel any familiarity. If that sounds like a good way to spend an hour and a half.
