Moonwatt secures $ 8.3m to dial to solar living power with sodium-ion storage

Drive to decurbon our economies through electrification and clean energy continues to generate speed around battery technologies, as storage has an important role in enabling green infections. While renewal is a clean source of energy than burning fossil fuels, their power generation is not always consistent. In the case of solar – that has seen a huge increase in deployment in recent years – once the sun stops shining on photovoltaic cells, the power generation stops.

To regulate the variability of solar plants, a solution is to store energy when there is a glute (during daylight). In this way, the stored power can be made available at other times, including a period of high demand – which usually occurs in the later day when there is less sunlight all around.

MonwtA clean tech startup set up in the Netherlands last year last year is working on a battery-based energy storage system, which is co-located for solar power plants to help manage this variability, and adapt. The team designed the battery enclosure hardware dedicated to connect to the grid, designed inverter power electronics and the software required to integrate and manage storage systems.

Startup says its approach will enable solar plants to increase their revenue to be able to sell more solar energy (when the energy price is more attractive) and costs cost reduction at the plant level as the design gives a mutual form to some electrical infrastructure. Target solar plants are those that produce at least a few hundred kilowatt energy – so originally anything other than residential photovoltics deployment.

In particular, the system of the moonwat is being built around sodium-ion cells for batteries that will store solar energy. The technology provides a seductive option for lithium-ion because production depends on the cheap (and easy) raw materials, which helps to keep the cost low.

While sodium-ion batteries may have a lower density than lithium-ion cells, the challenges of size and weight can occur-some applications are challenging (eg dynamic/EVS, where weight is an important idea) -The traction for technology renewal is receiving tractions as a low cost storage option, where conditions are more favorable, where the conditions are more favorable, stationary installations are more favorable, stationary installations are more favorable. Are.

Getting more juice than PV

Moonwatt’s pitch for solar power plants is that their energy storage system allows them to increase their capacity factor to 80%. Plants that buy will be able to double their internal rate returns (IRR), they also suggest.

“Originally, what we allow our partner to do, doubled their return,” the co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer, Valentin Rota, Techchchan. “So in the AAA (Credit-Celebration) country, I would say that an average PV (photovoltaic) property is around, let’s say that 8% to 12% return-IRR-and we will bring the assets to about 20%.”

Startup founder Trikdi – CEO Zukui Hu and CTO Giliom Mansini – met about a battery tech for Tesla almost a decade ago. They have since continued to work together in individual employers and different projects, including small scale, gaining experience on off-grid solar storage.

“We start this application in advance, which we call a micro grid, so usually a small grid-resistant generator,” recalls Rota. “But as the cost of the battery decreased and the cost of storage actually went down, those applications started arriving in large countries on large grids, and it is actually inspired by the fundamental speed of solar.”

Founders also worked together in battery manufacturer Freair (Rebranded as TI Energy). And once they saw the cost in the right direction, Rota says that the spark for the establishment of the moonvet – nominated for an energetic drama on ‘Moonshot’, we believe – they were feeling that they could add their knowledge of battery hardware and apply battery technologies to provide electricity to solar storage benefits.

“We realized that this application – solar storage – is the backbone of the future world power grid, but there is no product dedicated to it yet,” he says. “So what is about Moonwatt: It is about making solar-surrendered battery storage products first.”

Since the amount of solar energy produced globally continues to increase the condition of the startup, the industry will start searching for dedicated storage rather than with the “cookie cutter” product.

The “large discrimination” of the moonwatt involves the use of sodium-ion battery technology per rota-which says that provides better scalability, cost reduction and carbon footprints than lithium-ion.

The design of their storage system also uses a distributed architecture (instead of being centralized), making it easier to integrate for plants as it explains it. He also says that the approach they are taking allows for greater efficiency and thanks to the panels that are very close to the panels for adding storage due to the decrease in the cost of transmitted power.

“Our overraching goal, using these three characteristics, is to reduce the cost of electricity of these dispatched solar plants,” they say.

Seed money to step on gas

Although it is still early for this (just) month -old business and its prototype products, Moonwatt has now shut down the € 8 million seed funding round (about $ 8.3 million) to step on gas and is being launched with pilot installation somewhere in Europe next year. They then expect to be in the position of their first commercial deployment in 2027.

The seed round has been co-dominated by Daphney and Li Partners, with Founders Future, AFI Ventures (by Ventac) and Kima Ventures, along with strategic business angels and customers.

Commenting in a supporting statement, Daphney participant Paul Bazin suggests that the Moonwatt’s approach is “the industry’s success is missing.”

“Renewable energy growth has crossed all expectations, but we are reaching a tipping point, where it will not be able to move forward without better energy storage,” he said. “Moonwatt, manufactured by industry giants, is solving it with a differential storage product manufactured especially for solar.”

Rota tells us, “We nourish an ambition to be a large-scale player, a large-scale player, because we want to create an impact.” “And costs with the scale. And we know that in this industry it is a lower-rich business, so we should be competitive. ,

Rota says that the decision to focus on solar energy is attractive economics and this type of renewable energy is already widely boiled.

“Solar is interesting because it is – on costs per megawatt hours – very competitive and more,” he notes. “But it is also that the solar is slightly more universal. It is already being deployed in more than 120 countries per year. ,

Customization for solar only means that the startup can focus on creating a completely design option to help plants the most from its property, including it when it comes to reduce the cost of connecting its energy to the grid.

“Looking forward, the way to reduce (solar energy) cost is by reducing the overall balance of plant cost. So you need to reduce the number of transformer cables, etc. and the way you do this, you are in the form of solar and storage, not at the medium voltage level, but in fact at a low voltage level – in fact – are really next to each other, ”he suggests.

“By doing this, they share the same electric infrastructure to connect with the grid. And if we expand slightly to see more like the level of the country, then it is also something that we have to do. Because, today, a stand alone solar plant uses its grid capacity only in 20% time, but when you add storage of the meter, you can actually move the use of energy so that you make more efficient use of this grid capacity. ,

Startup business at hand is also about developing solar plants with a feed in tariffs – “almost” – about helping to become an energy trader with a flexible property, he said.
