Artist Job Burns has completed a 300 -year -old renewal Farmhouse South -western EnglandTurn it into a house designed to celebrate its rural identity and timeworn details.
Burns In 2019, the Chelsea School of Art completed his degree in spatial design, when he was approached by the customer to take a look at a recently purchased rural property.
The initial interaction about a change in decoration developed in a more overall project, which aims to return the farmhouse to its prior pride, which after decades of inferior renewal.
According to Burns, the loose brief was focused on building a house with a highly individual style where the customer could relax and avoid the stress of everyday life.
“He wanted to lead here in the context of lifestyle, it was all about slowing down,” designer told Dezen. “It is not a smart home with a lot of technology; all switches are mechanical, so it sounds like stepping back in time.”
The project included reorganizing dark and tight interior to create a series of more functional places that maintain aspects of the character of the original building.
An preliminary survey highlighted structural issues, with a delay and post -expansion decisions, contributed to a time -line that ended for nearly five years.
The first phase included removing unnecessary elements and opening the surface to bring it to more light. The roof was also removed on both floors to highlight the original roof beam.
The layout of the six-bedroom was reduced to the four bedrooms, in which one of the original rooms was converted to create a bathroom and walk-in wardrobe for principal suits.
An old coat wardrobe was hiding the entrance of an already unseen basement and incorporating two brick-dhunsar rooms, which were restored as part of the project.
During renewal, Burns managed to maintain features such as oak doors, floors and beams, while introducing fixcuts and decorations that contribute to the generous experience of the house.
“Anytime we were making something new, the purpose was to try and make it feel as old as possible,” he suggested. “There are many unique moments where materials or objects we used, they add a new layer of history to the blank space.”
To achieve the necessary expansion and level of finish, Burns collaborated with a local father-and-son contractor team, specific in renewal projects, whose experience with traditional building methods directed many design decisions.
He said, “We were lucky for these people who understood how things were done 200 years ago.” “Descriptions such as” ensuring lime used in mortar matches the original color, making a big difference in such a project. “
The use of materials including lime washed walls, polish plaster and exposed stone feels a warm and touch to the interior that is gradually extended by details such as round returns on the curved walls and window.
The color palette was extracted from the contexts provided by the customer during their visit throughout the property, as well as with its passion of bold hue.
“In my artistic practice I use too much opposite and saturated colors, so I wanted to bring it to the project,” he explained. “It helps to balance the spaces because if everything was muted, it would have felt very monotone.”
On the ground floor, normal spaces, including kitchen and dining room, mostly intend to create a quiet environment for comfort and socialization of the performance of neutral tones and natural textures.
There are rich colors in more intimate areas, such as terracotta-tond bathroom and a room that is mostly presented in black colored which contains just a chimney and a piano.
The color has also been launched, which was restored in the form of burning glass windows. The glass is included in a gate and an arched opening that creates a visual relationship between the kitchen and the lounge.
Some furniture and decorations were taken from customer collection, while other pieces were sour for the project with the help of a stylist Hanna Ali,
The standout includes a pendant shade by designer Carlo Nasan and a blue glass standing lamp purchased on a trip to Italy. The Murarano Glass Joom in the living room was originally from the mother of Burns, and some sculptures of artists were also included in the rooms.
The entire house features renovated elements, which includes tiles recurred from the original roof that now form the base of the chimney. The trees falling from the garden were used to make tables and put them in cold storage.
Burns claimed that the client’s emotional response to the end results made the years of slow progress worthwhile, saying that the project also changed its way to think about space and historical buildings.
He said, “I have always been interested as a way to echo with the place in material cultures, as a way to ask questions about the identity through texture, color and materiality: what does it mean what to be British, what we have inherited, and what we want to do next,” He concluded.
“This project was a way to trace that through the manufactured form, grounding something contemporary in a long, calm history. Let the past be present, and give it a new shape.”
