Should you be visiting, the showroom-atelier can be found in the industrial district of Sidi Ghanem, surrounded by local craft shops, boutiques, perfumes and galleries. It is set over four airy floors, including two sunlit levels for exhibitions, an underground warehouse and a terrace where local artisans can work to create rugs and other artworks. The place is filled with locally made terracotta vases, furniture, statues and chairs.
As well as luxurious traditional Moroccan rugs of the classic, vibrant Boujad and richly textured Berber varieties, Sufian Zarib is known for more contemporary and innovative designs, in which artisans experiment with technique and form. Some specialty rugs include tie-dye and cubist designs. Many of their carpet weavers are Berber women from the Atlas Mountains, and they also work with emerging local artisans. Berber women use the wool of the ancient, native Siroua sheep breed, dyeing the material with natural dyes, practicing the centuries-old classic Berber knotting to create attractive patterns. Zarib also has a curated inventory of heirloom vintage rugs, buying only the “truly unique, special ones.” This includes the Tuareg mats, woven from natural fibers by the semi-nomadic people in North Africa, in which Zarib is of particular interest.
After considering rugs for his future space, Elordi went on to attend a gala dinner at the Palace Badi in Marrakech, a ruined 16th-century palace.
