In his new graphic novel, ‘simplicity,’ Matty Lubachanski investigated the dark side of communal life (and much more)

Mattie Lubchansky has written and illustrated many graphic novels, including 2023 riveting Boys WeekendBut his latest, SimplicityIt disregards its earlier work. Although it maintains Lubachanski’s signature intelligence and amazing artistry, the book also enters the area on time with focus on the threats of commune-slash-karm and undisputed loyalty.

Circulation Talked to Lubchanski about stuffing Simplicity With ideas, his long passion with sects, the risk of AI for art, and painting various diastopia. The conversation has been edited and condensed.

Circulation: This time the composition process was different from those people for two previous graphic novels, Boys Weekend And Antifa Super-Sidear Cookbook?

Mattie lubchahsky: Okay, more smarter people are talking about this, but you always hear, “You have to learn how to write what you are writing,” and it was definitely the case for me. All three of my books have been very different. Antifa The book was a major outbreak of political functions of small forms that I was doing. Boys Weekend There was no autofuction, but it was in the universe of things where I had something that I entered a story story by changing all the details and adding it to the future and adding sarcasm in the future. With this book, I started with the characters – the main character, especially – and then made everything around it. I did research for this book, which I never do, and as I thought more about it, I have just started depositing more and more goods in this book. Boys Weekend There is an idea in this, which is the idea that trans people are human, while I think so Simplicity It has 40 views, after a long time trying to crawl all of them there.

What is interested in the subject of community and cults?

I have always suffered from faults. I mean, there is one at the center of my last book; I realized that I was completing this book that both books have similar campuses. I think there is something in the air about the community. In the last 40 to 50 years, there are lots of queues and, recently, a lot of trans separatist movements, where it likes, if you are a gay person in a big city, you are probably someone who tries to start a farm with his friends. It is only in the air. In my research, I was reading a lot about the 19th century pre-Marxist socialist groups, and now our time is not clearly the same as what the world looks like. But there is a similarity in the idea that people’s lives are being arranged again, and people feel that they do not have control over their fate, their bodies, their communities. So this is a strange bridge, like, I am going to start a new society. Everyone is going to see how good it is. I think I am always fascinated by the fact that a person leaves everything and joins one of these groups.
