This is a guest post from Raimee Iacofano Rymeterwell,
Growing in Michigan, Ludington had a place. Every summer, my family packs the car, some classic rock (Think Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, and topical linked skinhard singalong), and head west for the days of the beach, lighthouse mountaineer, and the best superman ice cream. It was a tradition for us every year because my grandparents called Ludington home.
As a child, it felt like pure magic. Sleeping for the sound of waves, chasing barefoot in the sand, and sticky fingers from the melting cone that somehow dripped to my elbow. Ludington was not just a holiday location for us, it was a special place to create our family memories!
But then life happened. I grew up Things changed. I started traveling to the world, chasing new beaches, and eventually moved to California across the country. My summer declined about the beach towels and bonfire on the Lake Michigan and the airports, new countries and the places that are away from my bucket list, were more.
And yet, Ludington was always stuck behind my mind. No matter how many rocks I had increased in Ireland, or in temples I wandered in Asia, wanted to come back to my part. To see if it is still the same magic or if I beat it.
Finally, in this summer, I returned for the first time in more than a decade. And … wow. Ludington is even more special now. It is attractive and peaceful, yet it is absolutely packed with things. If you are sleeping on the West Michigan (or normally Michigan), this is your official wake-up call.
I felt that this journey would be a bit indifferent, perhaps a cool walk down memory lane. Instead, Ludington completely surprised me with roof dinner, brooariies with fire pits, grand hiking trails and so many adventures. Honestly, here is a lot that you can stay for a week and still Leave with a list of things for “next time”.
Here is told how I spent my time and everything, if you are planning your journey to Ludington.
Things to do Ludington
1. Beach day and lighthouse trek
First stop: Sterns Park Beach. It is completely independent and moving from the city, which I like. We saw a ton snacks, people, and even played a slight reshuffle (yes, the coastline is the correct shift court!). The sand is soft, the vibe is placed back, and the water is the endless dark blue that forgets you that you are not in the sea.
If you are getting up early, or are ready to stay late, walk the breakwall for Ludington North Breakwater Light. The lighthouse is amazing during both sunrise and sunset, and each gives a completely different mood to the lake. Pro Tip: If you go out around 9 am, you will catch SS Bejar, a historic coal -powered car boat, which makes its way from lake Michigan to Visconsin. Tradition traditions have to be goodbye to the ship, and it seems that the small town has to step into a straight moment from the US.
For some more courageous, head of Ludington State Park. This is often called the “Crown Jewel” of Michigan’s state parks – and I get it now. A distance of twenty five miles at a distance of twenty five miles through forests, dunes and beaches, with stops in both Michigan and Halin Lake. Main part? Hiking for large sebal point lighthouse. It is about two miles away, but walking is very beautiful and the payment is very large: a long, striped lighthouse against the waves from the 1800s standing guard. This is the kind of place that stops you and thinks, “Wow, I can’t believe it is in Michigan.”
2. Museum time (because I secretly love history)
One of my favorite journey Quirks is that I always end in at least one museum – no matter where I go. In Ludington, I found two gems:
- Historical White Pine Village: An outdoor museum with more than 30 historical buildings, an old -fashioned courtyard from a room schoolhouse. Wandering felt as if stepped back in a simple time, and it gave me a whole new appreciation for Michigan’s roots.
- Port of ludington maritime museum: Right if you love the history of great lakes, lighting, or boats. It is in a former coast guard station and has such a fun mix of interactive performance and vintage attraction.
Bonus: Both spots are super photogenic so bring your camera.
3. Water adventure and nature fixed
If you are an outsider, Ludington is originally heaven. If you want more than the party-on-the-quarter vibe, you can hire a kayak in a peaceful paddle for a peaceful paddle, or catch a pontoon boat. Padboard is another fun option- great workouts, and you get a completely different perspective of the lake.
Not in water? There are also mountain biking, disc golf and lots of hiking trails. Ludington is actually the best in both worlds: small town attraction mixed with endless outdoor adventures.
To eat and drink in Ludington
I will be honest: I was not expecting Ludington’s food scene. But wow. From breakfast places to brooariies, I was severely affected.
Breakfast and casual bite
- Cafe 106: Comfortable and cute, perfect for the brunch. After a morning walk, his omelet killed the spot.
- Flavor house: The most prestigious ice cream shop in the city. I am eating Superman here, but this journey discovered carrot cake ice cream and tell me – it changed my life.
- Sandbox on Sterns Beach: Serve right from water, petty sliders, experienced fries and ice cream. Perfect Beach and Chill Food!
Dinner with a scene
- Hard,: Near the State Park, with a huge bierorous, live music and even lawn game. It is part-restaurant, part-entertainment hub.
- Blue moon bistro: Adorable roofing courtyard with seasonal dishes. This is where I had the best ruben sandwich of my life (and I don’t say that lightly).
- Jamesport Brooking Company and Ludington Bureing: Absolutely for two great Bruberries- Golden Hour with Outdoor Angan.
- Hamlin Part on the Lake: A new place (literally) on a shock with the lake scene (literally). Come for dinner, or just grab the cocktail on your lower level courtyard. Bonus: You can also come by boat.
Some sweet + coffee
- Kilwin: Cheating + chocolate = heaven.
- Red cock coffee: With comfortable, friendly, iced lattes that hit the spot after a warm day.
- Humanity: If you are a tea drinker, or simply require a reset between activities, this place is perfect.
Where to live in Ludington
There is a stretch for every type of passenger.
- Camping: Ludington State Park has beautiful campgrounds that keep you closer to nature.
- City: Stay in a historic inn, hotel, or B&B for easy access to beaches and restaurants.
- Leakfront: For some special, see Hamlin Lake Rental. I stopped Sunset Bluff ResortAnd this was perfect.
We had a little yellow A-frame house with comfortable cabin vibes, but all are necessary. The best part? A private fire pit of water. Every night, we redeemed S’Mores, saw cotton candy sunset, and exploded local beer opened from Ludington Buying. It was a place that immediately relieves stress and makes you feel that you are the exact place where you are going to happen.
Best local shops in Ludington
I always take time out to wander from local stores when I travel – it is one of the best ways to feel for a city. In Ludington, I found some gems with Ludington Avenue and South James Street:
- Sexy nomadic: My favorite! Vintage clothing, Moroccan jewelry, a beautiful curated shop with ceramic and handmade treasures. It felt as if a global market was stepped into – but here in Michigan.
- Sister bees: Women owned and filled with natural skincare, bezwax products and Michigan Honey. Such a thoughtful place for gifts.
- Use of Windowsill and new books: Casual, reception, and full of great reading. I picked up a romantic novel (obviously). Employees were very kind, and reminded me why I always stay at Indie Bookstores when I travel.
Returning to Ludington as an adult was like reading a childhood book again and searching for new magic between lines. It felt grounding, indifferent and fresh at a time. There is something powerful about seeing those places which give you shape and feel that they are equally beautiful – sometimes better – you are missed.
If you have never gone to West Michigan, or it’s been some time, put Ludington at the top of your list. It is a big heart, with a big heart, stunning landscape and a community that makes you feel right at home.
Trust me! I am already planning my next trip. And maybe, it may be, it will become a tradition again.
