How Audi is trying to win in F1 within five years

It has been 10 months since Matia Binoto’s involvement Save As its main operations and technical officer, and it is now a matter of months until the Swiss Formula 1 team is morph in Audi.

The German brand is taking the F1 challenge for the first time, and knows that it will not be easy with a team to vault yourself in front of the grid that has not created a podium since 2012 – more than 250 Grands Prix first.

Given the obstacles imposed by the budget cap and aerodynamic testing restrictions, the most obvious decision so far has been to focus on the team’s efforts on the new 2026 technical rules of F1, given that it was always going to struggle this season.

But this does not mean that 2025 is a complete writing-closer Nico HulkenburgThe opportunity in Australia is at seventh place.

Binoto told Autosport, “It should be the year of development if possible.” “I don’t think the situation in the constructors championship matters as much as it is fighting for the points in every race. We need to find continuity in the results, and it will be a major jump.”

Laying a foundation like a toad

Binoto’s timeline to win Audi is five years – in other words, to be a title contender in 2030.

While some teams repeatedly announce such sublime long-term goals-see AlpineSince 2021, the “100-race project” has been abandoned, now with Flavio Brytor, it is expected to fight for the title in 2027–awar is not so ambitious since its 2000 BMW era, and Binoto emphasizes the “shared objective with Audi”.

The plan has the ability to give enough time to the team to lay the required foundation. Italian wants to take a leaf from Ferrari’s book, when after more than five consecutive sessions in the early 2000s, led by Jean Todd, in the early 2000s, and even after winning the championships of five consecutive drivers in the crowns of six constructors, remained part of the Maranelo-based squad.

“If we look at the past, I was in Ferrari and I had a brilliant era with Michael (Shumakar), but all teams require a period to make themselves: Jean Tod reached Marnelo to win only in 2000 in 1993, and I don’t think he is the only example to lay a solid foundation,” Banto said. “

“Just look at the recovery of McLaren, which was not fast. It takes time to work on infrastructure, on equipment, on people, on organization and also on culture.

“Audi is ready to implement its German culture on a Swiss team, which has its own personality, and adds an important niche of foreigners. It will not be straight to join them together.

“When someone talks about culture, anyone refers to behavior, the spirit of the team; it should not be surprising that if it takes time. It will take three years to make it, and it will take two years to consolidate two.”

Staff and infrastructure now key – in three different countries

Building and integrating the team will be based on two clear columns, which are more interacted than ever – employees and infrastructure.

East has always been a problem for the Hinville-based squad, reluctant to increase their lives with many skilled F1 engineers-and, for many, to overthrow their families-to overthrow their families-to Switzerland.

Binoto is very aware that this is an issue. “When you try to rent in England, you find out that this is never the right time, because the children are still in school, because the wife has a job, because there is still a house to sell,” he said.

Still, when asked why people do not want to go to the country, they said: “Who told you? I think we will surprise you. No, I do not agree.

“I like Switzerland, you know. I think it is a good place to work, with high quality of life, and family reference is also positive, because there is a high level of security. I think it can become our competitive advantage.

“Of course, to attract people, you must first give your project reliability. A name is not enough, Audi is not enough; I also need concrete tasks, which we are implementing.

“An example (the team’s principal) is the arrival of Jonathan Wheatley (from Red Bull) and some sponsors, which we will announce; another investment that was made by Qatar Fund that guarantees the necessary funds. We started with a new pair of drivers, such as young men like Gabriel (Bortoleo). And we will hiring soon.

“I am confident that if we meet again in a year, the question will be different: ‘How did you manage to attract so many people?”

An important step is the upcoming Saubar Center of Technology UK of the team, which aims to attract the best talent from the English ‘Motorsport Valley’. It will work directly with Hinville (Chesis) and Nuburg (engine) features located in Germany.

Binoto hopes that the new engineering hub “to open” to open “about 20 people” in the next few weeks, and to include “become an entry point for Hinville” for employees, which may be reluctant to move from Gate-Go to Switzerland.

Meanwhile, back in Hinville, Audi has a great deal to work to modernize its features – also with a new simulator.

“We work on many fronts, not one, and they should move forward in parallel,” Binoto said. “We need to expand, so we are thinking about the construction of new buildings; then we need more people, and we need to increase our internal manufacturing capacity. Anyone who knows Hinville knows that it is not easy to expand the current site, so we have to go out slightly out of the current circumference.”

When someone believes that Audi needs to achieve all this while being the first engine manufacturer to join F1 since Honda’s struggle a decade ago – an area that the brand initially expects not to be at the top – the entire challenge is a huge. But Binotto is adigal: what will happen to Audi.
