What types of American Express travel insurance are available?
American Express Travel Insurance Offers preset packages, but you can also create your own coverage and choose only the protection you want. The best way to look at the options for a specific trip is to click on the link in the previous sentence and enter a few details about your trip, but here’s a look at both types of products.
Create your own coverage
Being able to select only the protection you want is relatively unique, so here’s a look at the types of coverage offered by American Express Travel Insurance that I could choose from as a Florida resident for a sample trip:
- Trip Cancellation and Disruption: This type of coverage can provide reimbursement for non-refundable expenses or additional costs if you need to cancel before your trip begins. This coverage may also provide reimbursement for additional costs if your travel is interrupted. However, this coverage is not available for the portion of your travel purchased with travel rewards credits, points or miles.
- Global Medical Security: This type of coverage can cover emergency medical and dental expenses on travel that begins at the covered person’s permanent residence, outside a 150-mile radius of the covered person’s permanent residence, and ends at the end of the trip. The first occurs within 60 consecutive days. This coverage also includes an emergency evacuation benefit which will arrange and pay for evacuation to the nearest adequate medical facility if you suffer from any illness or suffer an accidental injury and require treatment during the covered journey. You can choose from three coverage limits when purchasing this coverage, although the dental coverage maximum with all three options is $750.
- Travel Accident Protection: This type of coverage is payable when accidental death or dismemberment occurs while boarding, traveling on or alighting a scheduled airline or common carrier vehicle of a covered person. When purchasing this coverage, you can choose from two coverage limits.
- Global Baggage Security: This type of coverage can reimburse you for lost, damaged or stolen baggage, whether it’s checked or carried on board your flight or at your hotel or cruise property. This coverage may also provide reimbursement for necessary replacement items if your luggage is delayed. When purchasing this coverage, you can choose from four coverage limits.
- Global Travel Delay: This type of coverage can reimburse you for accommodations and other necessary expenses if the covered person’s travel is delayed, including if your flight is overbooked and you are inadvertently denied boarding. Missed flight connections, and if your flight departure is delayed or cancelled. When purchasing this coverage, you can choose from three coverage limits.
These à la carte coverage options include access to a 24-hour travel assistance hotline that can provide travel assistance at any time before and during your trip.
