The application of the same materials throughout the space contributes to an immersive experience that emphasizes the interplay of light, texture and color on the brick surfaces.

Unlike typical cinema interiors, the architects incorporated openings that allow natural light to enter the lobby and café area. This results in a dynamic effect of changing shadows throughout the day.

Multiple brick shapes rise above the floor to create countertops and booths with curved profiles, while arched shapes suspended from the ceiling like stalactites help hide light and air vents.

The bricks covering the floor and ceiling have integrated lighting that shines through holes in their surface at night. Uplighting was also used to bring soft, indirect light to the upper arches.

The various bulges have been arranged to create a layered aesthetic that enhances the dynamism of the space. There is bench seating on either side of the reception counter that appears to rise from the surrounding floor.

As a safety measure to prevent collisions, the edges of wave-like shapes and some hanging elements are colored gray to make them stand out against the otherwise monochrome background.

The cinema’s main auditorium is surrounded by curved wooden shapes that reference the way the South China Sea wraps around Hainan Island. Integrated lighting enhances the layered composition.

The OnePlus partnership wanted the cinema to eschew the conventions associated with this type of venue and deliver a memorable and communal experience that couldn’t be replicated when viewed at home.
