Only six rounds remain in the 2025 Formula 1 season, george russell has yet to sign a new contract with mercedesFollowing their spectacular win at the Singapore Grand Prix, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff explained the delay in the new deal, claiming that “good things take some time”.
Russell joins Mercedes Williams in 2022 and his contract with the team was later extended until the end of 2025. That deal is now set to expire, and the 27-year-old remains in discussions over his future with the team.
Both parties have remained tight-lipped on the progress of these talks, but Wolff admitted after the Singapore GP that the pair are now working on “extensions” to a new contract.
“Contractually, good things take a while,” Wolff said after Russell scored a lights-to-flag victory at Marina Bay on Sunday. “It’s about detail, and it’s not about big themes.”
When pressed by Sky Germany about the progress of these negotiations, Wolff said: “We will announce it soon.”
As for Russell’s part in the proceedings, he told reporters before the Singapore race that “things have to be done correctly”. Talks are ongoing between the Briton and his employer as the pair look to find something that is “mutually beneficial”.

“I think for any driver, when you get to a certain point in your career, things have to go right,” Russell said. “Every time you renew a contract, it is the most important of your life and should be done with good care. There is nothing to worry about, and it will be done when it’s done.”
Wolff’s praise for Russell suggests there is no need to worry about his F1 future, as there are only other unconfirmed seats for next year. alpine Or two Red Bull-supported outfits.
“He’s been tremendous this year,” Wolfe commented. “I didn’t see the mistakes. There were weekends when he said to himself, ‘I could have done more, and I wasn’t racing well.’ But this happens with any driver.
“You can see that when it just merges, the car is in an ideal spot, and the driver is on top of things, it becomes a dominant formula, and that’s what we’ve seen here.”
Russell leaves Singapore fourth in the F1 drivers’ standings after taking two wins and six other podium finishes so far in 2025.
