DTM Championship behind losing the lead

After dominating the opening DTM race in the Red Bull Ring on Saturday, Renny Rast on Sunday ended a nightmare with two penalty laps and lost the championship lead before the conclusion of the season.

Race Stuvers punished the rest for an unsafe release as he disrupted the main, if he was broken and HRT Ford fell back behind the driver, some rest could be avoided.

“(On the second pitstop) so many cars come at once,” the rest explained. “It is difficult to guess what traffic in fast lane would be when you start with cold tires. I was a little ahead, but I think the unsafe release was already done by the time when I was taken out. So I couldn’t do much.

“Of course, the second fine (crossing the white line on entry into the pit) was unnecessary. Generally there is a bollard, but it was gone. And of course I used to trust the bollard that was not there, looking for it and went to the white line. But it’s no excuse, it was just a foolish mistake.”

However, RAST has not given its title to the hocignheim finale to hopes.

He said, “We are still in the game. We have closed this difference in front,”

“There are still a lot of cars for the championship. I think there are probably nine of them. You just have to keep a quiet head and take the points.”
