first physical big face The store opened in December 2024, ahead of the annual Art Basel fair and concurrent events across the city.
Butler, a basketball player currently signed with the Miami Heat, brewed BigFace as an exclusive coffee brand in his hotel room during the 2020 NBA playoffs.
The brand’s online sales quickly grew in popularity, prompting Butler and his team to offer a “destination” where fans could purchase the coffee in person as well as spend time enjoying it.
Director Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film served as a reference point for the interior, which is predominantly white and minimally furnished like the film’s spaceship setting.
“It’s a futuristic but charming environment that’s as much about the experience as it is about the coffee,” said Dejan Jovanovic, DE-YAN founder of the BigFace store.
Merchandise emblazoned with the smiley Bigface logo – including apparel, mugs and insulated cups – is displayed inside backlit niches set within a wall of brushed stainless steel.
Opposite another display unit is wrapped in the same material and houses ready-to-drink canned beverages in the chiller.
The logo has also been enlarged and placed on the pill-shaped drop ceiling above the counter, which is located in the center of the space.
This counter has the same rounded-corner shape and has a matte-grey surface finish, on which the coffee grinder and taps for cold brew are located.
The entire building has a glossy brown floor, while the exposed beams and ductwork across the ceiling are painted white to blend into the surroundings.
There’s a seating area at the back of the venue, with concrete bleachers in one corner and several black leather soft chairs in the middle.
The design team said, “The design concept blurs the lines between art and space with a dynamic layout that encourages exploration and interaction.”
“Custom-made seating areas create a sense of intimacy, while open spaces allow for a communal experience.”
