Cannon’s RF 24-105 mm F/2.8L ISM Z Lens has created a lot of interest with its big aperture, power zoom and adequate price tag. But does it justify investment?
Coming from you Tony MellingerThis direct video makes an honest look Canon is RF 24-105 mm F/2.8 L USM Z lensMellinger hired the lens for some demanded shoots, to see if its unique power zoom feature is given in practical scenarios. Their first tests included photographs of vehicles at an off-road shop, where the f/2.8 aperture of the lens allowed them to produce impressive images, but the weight and size became immediately noticeable, especially compared to the small F/4 version. Although images benefited from that extra stage of light, it was a completely different story to take it comfortably. As Mellinger states, photographers who travel light or prefer compact setup will find this lens challenging.
A museum shoot and stream on the zoom during a professional corporate program, Mellinger tested the power zoom function specifically. While they found it easy to add subtle motion to it or smoothly zoom in a speaker, he notes a significant defect: Zoom action is not very smooth when starting or stopping themselves. Instead, it jumps every time every time it is active, which requires careful control to reduce distracted camera movements. Additionally, although you can control the speed of the zoom, easily reduces the ramp inability to significantly or to the excluding or single-camera setup for the setup, especially when you are continuously transmitted live or recording without the ability to edit these small hiccups.

Mellinger emphasizes the practical difficulties of integrating this lens in the existing setup, especially due to its size and unusual filter diameter of 82 mm, unlike the normal 77 mm used by most canon RF lenses. This means that photographers with lens collections may face the problems of compatibility issues or switching filters. Additionally, this lens consumes an important place in camera bag or backpack, which you can take more, limit it. For many photographers who prefer simplicity, the feature of small F/4 version can defeat the benefit of additional stops.
Nevertheless, Melinger admitted that some professional landscapes could avoid the unique combination of the range of this lens, aperture and alternative power zoom module. It fills a niche where the versatility in focal length and image quality is non-pervantic. Watch the video above for a complete run from Mellinger.
