Honoring the origin and reviving it with modernity – in Nusale district of Prague, a redevelopment project in Bolslavova 3 has brought a new life in a courtyard gallery building from the 19th and 20th century turn. Reconstruction preserved the historical essence of the structure while creating apartments with modern layouts to increase its normal places and to be contemporary living needs. The floor plan was allowed for the construction of 15 unique residential units, which offer views of the Nusale Valley. The new striking interventions are represented by an unconventional palette of powder shades that run throughout the house.
Courtyard Gallery Building – The comprehensive change of the building focused on creating compact layouts and spatial details, redefining several old tasks of the structure. Galleries, serving as a common open-air walkway with the entrance of the first units, now play the role of private balconies. The mask in a light Kashmiri tone is untouched to the back of the building. The specific character of the courtyard is emphasized by the arched roof of the galleries, softened by the functioning of ceramic chess-patern tiles and railings. The courtyard, accessible to all the residents, is complemented by well -maintained in front of the surface apartments. The roof covered with concrete tiles is opened by generous studio windows.
Common Space – Focus was placed in normal places, historically played a representative role in urban residential buildings. The same principle is applied here, preserving both original layouts and to some extent, material design. The plaster walls of the hallway, presented in gray and pink powder shades, take inspiration from period mural – their irregular patterns refer to the decorative elements of local historical buildings. Supplementing these tones is a dark brown veneer made with dark-tend panel entrances for individual apartments and mailboxes. The hallway floors combine the cast floor with areas of small-form tiles, which are thoughtfully arranged in front of the entrances of the apartment. Ladder – The centerbindu of shared places is the original curvature ladder, whose stones were slowly brushed and finished with a protective coating. The rough texture of the steps makes a specific contrast to the widely colored walls and apartment entrance of the corridors. The spiral form of the ladder is highlighted by microscopic linear light that air through all floors. Prakash design was developed from Penox Studio in collaboration with designers and engineers.
