On Tuesday, Applegate opened up about her podcast Messy (co-hosted by actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also has MS) about how the disease affects her independence and ability to perform normal tasks. The actress joked that she was unable to shave her body in the shower without falling.

In an experience she said could be relatable to others with MS, Applegate said she had to “sit on the floor of her shower and contort herself in weird ways” to get ready.

For Applegate, this kind of frank humor about the pain and discomfort of living with MS is part of coping.

In a 2022 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson ShowApplegate said her “shield of humor” is what keeps her healthy.

“But of course, deep down I feel things and I do it to distract and also so that people are not afraid to be around me,” she confessed. “When people see me now as a disabled person, I want them to feel comfortable. That we can laugh about it.”
