Do you know what is common in Nikon D5, D6, Z8 and Z9? Yes, you are right, these are the most advanced models from Nikon since 2016, which keeps the speed above all. And, I am not talking about autofocus or constant shooting speed, but the speed with which you change the position of shooting can change the camera settings. You can do it with incompatible Remember the shooting ceremonyWhich has a large ability for unexpected photography scenarios.
What do you remember is good for shooting?
In short, shooting shooting is for situations where you need to change your camera settings very quickly. I just don’t mean small adjustments Aperture Or shutter speedBut complex and comprehensive changes that will take so much time otherwise it may mean to remember a shot.
Along with remembering the shooting, you can use a single press of programmable buttons to convert shooting mode, metering, whole exposure triangle, exposure compensation, white balance, full AF settings, and shutter release mode to once!
The possibilities for this feature are infinite. For example, in wildlife photography, there are usually long -term stable moments, followed by very dynamic. Infection between these states often does not take more than an eye nap – and remember that shooting can quickly change your camera settings.
For example, a raptor is sitting on her verse, looking for her hunting. Such birds can live in such a way that is a great opportunity to take environmental images. Since they often sit on a branch like idols, there is no need to use sharp shutter speed. Instead, I often use the speed of about 1/60s in combination with self-timer. I usually set the camera to take a sequence of three shots at an interval of 0.5 seconds. It gives me more light and therefore more dynamic range, better sharpness and color, and less noise.
I sometimes set the AF area mode to cover a small portion of visualization. Especially in dense vegetation, it makes it easier to find the eye of the subject for the camera.
However, everything changes fundamentally when the first steady raptor decides to work. Then, you have to change a lot on the camera in a second. To freeze the speed, you need a shutter speed of at least 1/1000s, preferably rapid. Even the “portrait” aperture of F/4 will not be ideal. For birds in flight, it would be better to stop slightly down. Of course, you will also have to react to all this by changing the ISO.
You will also need to probably convert the AF region to 3D-Tracking or a custom, large area. Oh, I almost forgot, it is not the best idea to use self-timer to shoot birds in flight! I have verified it a few times (most pain when shooting a Harpi eagle) and I believe, something better like constant shooting on 15fps or 20fps.
One partition is a challenge on the impossible to change manually into another. There are basically two solutions. The first is Shooting menu bank And the other is Remember the shooting ceremony,
Shooting menu bank is not a bad option, but it has two problems. First of all, you have to do Two Things: Press the function button and then turn on the command dial. Even more importantly, if you had a self-time set in Bank A (Bird on Branch), you will also have it set in Bank B (Bird in Flight). Beep, Beep, Beep … Harpy disappears in the eagle canopy … click, click, click. It still hurts. Shooting of remembrance changes everything at once, with a press of a button. So, how can you activate it?
How to remember shooting?
Before we join it, it is important to note that the shooting is remembered Only Original camera settings (A) and alternative settings (B) are used to switch quickly and temporarily. When you forget any change you have in B, when you return to A.
To remember the shooting, you have to assign it to a button that is easily and quickly accessible, even with your eye on visuals. Buttons such as disposal, sub-selector, video-ridden button, or any FN button in front of the camera are perfect for this purpose.
On Z8 or Z9, go to F2: Custom Control (Shooting) Custom Control (Shooting) Custom Control (Shooting). On D5 and D6, you will find the same under F3. From the menu, select the button you want to assign the function. You can also choose from the button on the lens. No surprise with a Z-mount lens. But the interesting thing is that the function can also be assigned to four buttons in front of F-mount exotics (under L-FN button). As I came to know experimentally, you have to choose “AF-L” on the switch of the lens. This is very good because you otherwise do not lose very useful memory recall function.
There are two types of recall shooting functions that you can choose:
- Remember shooting functions: This first option works to maintain alternative settings of the camera until the function button is pressed and held.
- Remember shooting functions (hold): This second option is basically a classic switch. When the button is pressed, the camera switchs to the alternative mode (B), where it remains until the button is pressed for the second time. When the standby timer is finished or when the camera closes and again the camera will also return to the default mode (A).
When you remember the shooting function, a menu appears of parameters that can be stored in alternative settings. Check the box for the settings that you want to set separately in mode B. For each of these parameters, a value should be set and saved eventually. Another option is to set the camera in a normal way, as it should be in optional mode B, and save these settings with the “Save Current Settings” command. Press the menu button to save your settings. Now you are ready to go to the field with another virtual camera.
Some suggestions:
- The above mentioned cameras allow you to configure four custom settings banks. So if you feel that there are only two options (original setting A and optional settings B) is not enough, you can configure a unique optional setting in each bank. However, I recommend keeping it simple so that you are not lost in the combinations of the settings.
- Keep F2: Custom control (shooting) near the top in my menu. If you want to change the parameters of an alternative setting, it will be accessible immediately.
- The shooting functions of remembrance do not need to be used with each setting. For example, do you need to quickly switch between birds and people’s Air Force detection? Check only AF subject detection options.
- If you use the back button technology to focus, then it is better to remember to remember the shooting function (hold). In this way, you do not have to hold three buttons at the same time.
- Do not have a D5, D6, Z8 or Z9 and still want to switch between camera settings quickly? There is no problem, user settings or shooting menu banks work very equally. Switching between settings is not as fast, but it is usually completely fine.
conclusion
Classic photo journalists used to carry two cameras on their shoulders. Most of the time, they had a separate lens on each one, and they immediately grabbed the camera he needed. The recall shooting function is like another camera. You cannot change the lens on a button push, but you can change anything else about anything with shooting. This feature has made its way judiciously in a judicious manner in D5 without attracting too much attention. It also attracted my attention to Z9 for a few years. No more.
