Albertsons, the parent company of Walmart and Safeway, did not immediately respond to FOX Business’ request for comment on the egg price.
“Demand for shell eggs recorded modest increases in the last two weeks of the year, supported by concerns over tight supply due to persistent outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in layer flocks,” the USDA wrote. “These herd losses coming at a critical demand point have pushed wholesale prices well beyond the record high set in December 2022 when the HAPI outbreak had a similar impact on the market.”

Kevin Bergquist, sector manager at the Wells Fargo Agri-Food Institute, said egg prices are set to rise through 2023 due to a combination of seasonal price increases during the holidays and disruptions in egg supply due to bird flu.
According to Bergquist, prices last year “generally” remained above 2023 prices and even “often exceeded egg prices from 2022, when HPAI really took over the egg market.”
