“We were invited by Mandarin Oriental to reinterpret their color scheme, which they developed with Pantone,” Uchronia founder Julien Sebbon tells Dezeen.
“It’s the celadon green that we decided to create the underwater world with, because it reminded us of the beautiful greenery you can see under the sea.”
Uchronia wanted the hotel’s interior to also showcase British craftsmanship and worked with several UK studios to create original pieces for the suites.
Sebben said, “What we wanted to do was to highlight British craft by working with amazing British people to create some very fun pieces.”
Designs on display include moire fabric Govindiya Hemphill Designed to resemble dripping water, with curtains that hint at coral formations.
“The curtains are this idea of coral and this really fun, weird underwater world,” Sebben said.
The bedroom also features designer furniture made of extruded plastic james shaw and a flower lamp designed by Euchronia.
In the lounge, a desk made of resin and a bench designed to resemble coral decorate the space, while the bathroom features glass vessels designed by a glass artist jochen holz,
Sebban concluded, “We really wanted to show that the tradition of the Mandarin Oriental can be juxtaposed with modernity, which we try to bring in in a very enjoyable way.”
The suite’s design was unveiled earlier this week ahead of the London edition of the annual Frieze art fair.
