Fujifilm has announced instax mini leplay+an update of mini leplay camera from 2019The company calls it a “hybrid” camera; It has a digital sensor, but it can also print the images you take on Fujifilm’s Instax Mini instant film.
The actual camera part of the Mini LiPlay+ appears to be relatively unchanged. It still has a smaller Type 1/5 (6.46 mm²) sensor behind the 28 mm equiv. F2 lens, and enough internal storage to store about 45 of the 5MP images it captures. That storage can be expanded with a microSD card, and you can also use the camera to print images from your smartphone onto Instax film.
However, there are some changes. To top it all, there is now a second camera on the back of the camera, which Fujifilm says is for taking selfies. It has a 23mm equiv, F2.2 fixed focus lens, although the company makes no mention of what resolution or size sensor is behind it. You can use it to take selfies as normal, using the rear display to compose your shot, but you can also create what Fujifilm is calling a “Layered Photo”, which combines the image from the front and selfie cameras to show you and the location you’re taking the photo in one of four layouts.

The camera also builds on the native LiPlay’s ability to record audio, which can be played back via a QR code printed on the image. Using the companion app, you can now create a “Sound Album”, containing up to five images and the sounds recorded while they were drawn.
The camera body has also been redesigned with a more square design and simplified control layout. At 3″, the rear display is larger than the 2.7″ one on the original LiPlay, and the camera weighs about 10g more at 265g. It is available in light “Sand Beige” and dark “Midnight Blue” colours.
The Instax Mini LePlay+ will be available to retail later this month for $235. That represents a substantial jump over the original’s $160 launch price, although that camera currently sells for $200.
