- Google is developing a new horizontal layout for the volume slider of Google Android that the device will appear in landscape mode.
- This new horizontal slider will be deployed in the top-center of the screen, which is a design option similar to the one seen on the iOS of Apple.
- We gave evidence for this new layout in Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1, but it is not active yet.
Android’s big Material 3 expressive Redesign locks bring dramatic changes to screen, status bar, quick settings and information, but it also introduces micro twics for other UI elements. For example, the Volume Slider saw many small updates: The dot was replaced with a stream icon, the bar was less round, the menu icon marfles in a waveforce when the music rings when the music rings, and when the bar is hit or below, a minor bounce effect is added. It seems that Google has not been made to modify Android’s volume slider, however, as we have given evidence that the company is working on a new layout that can bring it more to its equivalent on iOS.
In the latest Android 16 QPR1 Release, the volume slider is deployed vertically in the middle of the right edge of the screen. This layout makes sense when placing a long smartphone in portrait orientation, as it is easy to reach the slider. In landscape mode, however, this vertical layout is less ideal, as it can cover important elements in a video.

Apple solves this problem on iOS, which is adapted to the volume slider to the phone’s orientation. In portrait mode, the slider is vertical (although the left side of the screen), similar to Android. In landscape mode, however, it becomes a horizontal slider posted in the top-center of the screen.

Volume slider layout in iOS in landscape mode
Since iPhones are much longer than being wide, the slider is easy to reach this top. Most Android phones share an uniform long aspect ratio, so the benefits of a horizontal layout are also applied there. Google looks agreed, which is why the company is experimenting with a new horizontal design for Android’s volume slider.
While digging through the latest Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1 Release, I found a new layout file in Android’s Systamui app, named “volume_dialog_horizontal
“This layout is currently unused because a flag”isVolumeDialogVertical
‘Hardcode has been done for truth, prevents the horizontal slider from appearing anywhere. Although I could not activate the new UI, I was able to add its design together by analyzing the layout file and comparing with the standard vertical.

The new horizontal slider will be posted in the top-center of the screen, much on iOS. Similar to the current vertical version, it will feature several major parts: an icon for current sound mode, the main volume slider, and a three-dot menu button. A separate section with additional sliders will also appear on the main one when there are many active volume currents, such as A. Aercast broadcast,
It is not clear when Google can present this new horizontal volume slider or in what conditions it will appear. The layout cannot be used on all devices, especially large tablets such as tablets where reaching the top of the screen is less convenient than the sides. For now, this change remains a hidden experiment, but it is a clear indication that Google is working to refine Android’s user interface for landscape mode.
