Keep roads clear of snow and ice. Regular shoveling (or snow blowing) is the best way to keep walkways, driveways and sidewalks safe and snow-free throughout the winter. Keep some pet- and plant-safe melted snow or sand on hand to provide grip on stairs and other slippery areas, and mark the edges of your driveway and sidewalks so you know where to shovel when the snow is deep. Have to stop.
If you plan to be away during the season (and it snows in your area), hire a service in advance to clear snow while you are away. Some cities issue tickets if you make the sidewalk in front of your house impassable, as this creates an unsafe condition for pedestrians.
